Remember When Howard Dean Yelling Made Him Unfit to Be President?
JANUARY 10, 2025
JANINE JACKSON
Remember January 2004, when Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean yelled in a pep talk to supporters after the Iowa caucus, and elite media declared that his growling and defiant emotional outburst was patent evidence of unacceptability? Having already declared Dean too excitableYelling and hollering is not an endearing quality in the leader of the free world, said the Washington Post (8/2/03)media found verification in the Dean scream, which was played on TV news some 700 times, enough to finish off his candidacy (Extra!, 34/04). As Pat Buchanan on the McLaughlin Group (1/23/04) scoffed: Is this the guy who ought to be in control of our nuclear arsenal?
Fast forward to the present day, when Donald Trump states, For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.
And todays journalistic response looks like a CBS News explainer (1/8/25), headed Why Would Trump Want Greenland and the Panama Canal? Heres Whats Behind US interest. Its simple, you see, and not at all weird. Greenland has oil, natural gas and highly sought after mineral resources. And you know what? Western powers have already voiced concern about Russia and China using it to boost their presence in the North Atlantic.
CBS tells us Trump is falsely alleging that the Panama Canal is being operated by China, but then adds in their own, awkward, words, China has also denied trying to claim any control over the canal. Takeaway: who knows, really? Believe what you want. PSyoure Americun, right?

(759 posts)are not today, nor were they then, the standards of the swing voters that we need to win to win state wide in the swing states.
It was suicidal to deem Howard Dean unfit in that particular primary and it will be suicidal to keep applying the same principles in the next primary and coalesce around the most calm and boring candidate possible.

(5,374 posts)and the spin on what happens. The corporate media is vehemently opposed to anything that approaches truly progressive change in this country. It does not matter what side of the aisle you are on, if your stated policies move the needle in any way, shape, or form towards a more equitable society, they will spin it in the most negative way they possibly can.
Add to that, any thing that does not highlight or promote division, divisiveness, or "us/them" mentality reduces their profit. Therefore everything is presented in the most divisive way possible.
The corporate media WANTS conflict. They want the government to flip from red to blue to red to blue ad nauseam. It gives them something to talk about, it makes their owner's rich, and it maintains the current horrible status quo.

I suspect it was the fairness doctrine that ended Dean's run.
