Gaza analysis: 64,000 deaths due to violence between October 2023 and June 2024

The full study is open sourced in The Lancet here

An excerpt from the article at phys.org

An independent study by researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) suggests the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza underreported the death toll due to violence by approximately 41%.

The LSHTM study estimated 64,260 traumatic injury deaths in Gaza between 7 October 2023 and 30 June 2024 compared to the 37,877 reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The findings, published in The Lancet, indicate that approximately 3% of the population of Gaza has died due to violence with an analysis showing that 59% of these deaths were women, children, and the elderly.

The researchers used a statistical method known as 'capture-recapture analysis' to estimate the number of traumatic injury deaths. This method overlaps data from multiple sources to arrive at estimates of deaths when not all data are recorded. The sources included Palestinian Ministry of Health hospital morgue records, a respondent-driven online survey, and social media obituaries.

The significant underreporting of traumatic injury deaths highlights the deterioration of Gaza's health care infrastructure and consequent inability to count the dead amidst ongoing violence. Based on the estimated underreporting rate, the total traumatic injury death toll as of October 2024 is thought to exceed 70,000 Palestinians.

59% women and children FFS.

There is also this:
The total death toll due to the war is likely to be higher as the analysis does not account for non-trauma-related deaths caused by disruption to health care, food insecurity, inadequate water and sanitation, and disease outbreaks.

Those types of indirect deaths are 2-3 times higher than direct deaths in most conflicts. With the conditions necessary to sustain life now totally destroyed in Gaza, I dread to think what the final toll will be.

As the authors state, immediate intervention is required. Otherwise we are looking at the worst of the worst-case scenarios that humanitarian agencies have been warning about for a year now.

Yes, I know, October 7th. It's much older and much larger than that one event. Be prepared, this is about to get as bad as it can get for the Palestinians and no, it's not anti-Semitic to want this to stop, immediately.

I have no doubt that's an accurate assessment of how many people in Gaza have died as a result of this war.

3. Manifest Destiny and Pacification Programs

The US pacification wars under the Manifest Destiny basically went from 1790 to 1890, ending at Wounded Knee with the demise of the "Ghost Dancers". The indigenous population fell from 650,000 to 250,000. Afterwards, the US held several World Fairs (St Louis and Chicago) and declared war on Spain in 1898 to unite the nation and heal the final wounds of the Civil War. This took place over 100 or so years and any idea of nationhood for the indigenous peoples were completely obliterated. Manifest Destiny complete.

Fast forward to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank across the Atlantic.

In 23 short years, Israel celebrates its Centennial in 2048. So, after 100 years, will Israel have completed its pacification program as part of its Manifest Destiny? Does anybody think there will be a Two-State Solution in 2048?

Destroying a nation, or a people, isn't just blowing up buildings and befouling a land with toxins, pollution, or sewage, while forcing mass exoduses. It's also destroying any symbols or ideas of that people's existence, like their music, art, or athletic accomplishments.

Below is the pre-Nakba Palestinian Soccer Team, a team of amputees after nearly twenty years of deliberate targeting by the IDF. More were killed or maimed after 7 Oct 2023. This is why we don't see many Palestinian athletes competing anywhere in the world. Now they are a Paralympics team:
