Why this week of memorials to Jimmy Carter is angering Evangelical leaders.
https://signalpress.blogspot.com/2025/01/this-week-of-memorials-to-jimmy-carter.htmlThe disconnect between Carter and the right wing Evangelical leadership has a lot to do with their blending of right wing extremist politics with their theology and doctrine, creating heretical principles requiring adherence to doctrinal conformity, and to certain political partisan perspectives as orthodoxy, rather than living the lifestyle that is the Christian gospel of Jesus Christ. Carter's theology, as exhibited by what he has taught in his Sunday School classes, is consistent with the life he lives and the values he exhibits, which is what the emphasis of conservative Evangelicalism once was. But the partisan political orientation of most of the rest of America's conservative Evangelicals has led them astray.
And that's why they can't stand Carter. People see the difference, and they associate Carter with the Christian gospel of Jesus Christ, and conservative Evangelicals with the partisan legalism they've embraced, including wrapping their arms around one of the most worldly, immoral, licentious-living, corrupt, anti-Christian human beings alive on this planet in Donald Trump.
And of course, that's getting a reaction.

(17,661 posts)Ecstatic to see this. And those Christians who turned away from Carter to embrace Reagan also turned away from the teachings of the New Testament.
The rewriting of Christianity to serve tyrants is one of the biggest, most mindboggling cons in history. And it exposes every self-professed Christian who goes along with it, leaving us to wonder if they read and understand the teachings.

(1,178 posts)the english translation serves james stewart's claim of "divine right of kings."
"render unto caesar."
there is also a lot of wisdom, for james carter "blessed are the peacemakers." is one of many passages

(7,220 posts)Right wing evangelicals have essentially turned their backs on God, and are walking the path of darkness.
It's their choice.
They chose to put political ideology above their religious teachings; chose to embrace hate, while rejecting love.

(4,683 posts)I live in an extremely red town, but the local newspaper editor ran a very solid front-page commemoration of Jimmy Carters life and some interesting stories about the time he paid a visit out here in 1991. Im sure there will be some town-folk who will not be happy about the tribute.

(4,148 posts)a pathological liar, a serial adulterer who bragged about sexual assaults, was an outspoken racist, and who did not even possess a single fruit of the spirit or one of the seven virtues. It became clear that their church had nothing to do with morality and love; rather it was just about money, power, and white supremacy.

(81 posts)Is this why the smartest guys in the room urged a "separation(?)" between Government and religious jingoism? Surely it's obvious now WHY. Government and religion corrupt each other and give cover to commit heinous acts of cruelty to achieve their goal of domination. Sadly, the Framers must have had a more naive vision of what future Oligarchs would fashion from the omissions of the Constitution and how religion would be abused to chip away at our individual Liberties, once let into the tent. Ignoring their own Gospel, slightly less than half of voters chose Barabas. Do they even see it? Sooner or later, Orange Antichrist will come for them too. " You won't need to vote."

I grew up in a Southern Baptist church, and got my fill of the mysticism, the rigid legalism, the literalism and the influence of a lot of Southern folk religion and superstition before I went to college. But I didn't have to do much deconstruction of all of that for myself. The theology professors at the Southern Baptist university I attended did most of that for me, destroying, with an in-depth historical and cultural context, separating out each book of the Bible and looking at it as it was originally written, to whom, what prejudices and historical factors affected the context, placing the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Christian gospel as it were, as the interpretive filter for the whole thing. It completely changed almost everything I'd ever been taught in Sunday School and in church, where most of our pastors lacked a theological education.
Some of the best allies in what is going to be the coming war against Trump Fascism and populist oligarchy will be the Baptists of the more moderate to liberal branch of that denominational family. There are organized groups of churches like Carter's Maranatha Baptist, that are as liberal and progressive, and committed to living by the principles of the Christian gospel, as exist in all of American Christendom. They will be the ideological counterpoint to Trump's darkness and Evangelical evil.
I've settled into a comfortable Quaker conscience, but disciplining myself as a peacemaker, when this kind of haywire politics is raging has made it difficult to stay inside the guardrails.

That's how that square is circled.

(24,518 posts)their tools ever. I hope that in a way, and I know that this is against the creed of some to advertise their works, but I hope that some plaques are placed onto these properties that Pres. Carter himself worked on. Something needs to remind a lot of people of Jimmy's works (besides when he was president), with Jimmy and his fellow parishioners' works for their fellow man. Wouldn't hurt to remind others of this giving spirit, in giving unto others.
And these supposedly religious sects (right wing extremists) have, IMHO, lost their way on helping others and instead, glorify themselves in the accumulations of yet more money, build bigger and bigger churches (monuments) to themselves, and not helping their fellow persons, but instead mock them, knock them down for not being rich, etc., and thump on their chests proclaiming their accomplishments. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Don't get me wrong, there are some out there that do things for their congregations and those suffering outside their churches. There are tons of people that do things, donate to their communities and not want any attention or credit. Their motto, it's not about them. It's about those that they are helping. It always has been that way, and I applaud them. God, in many ways, says this too.
Just one of the many verses that are out there, preaching this philosophy below. I could have picked easily 10 other verses but here's just one.
Luke 6:30, 35-36 tells us to give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful

(6,180 posts)were working on. They had told us that he would be next door, and that there would be time for shaking hands, greeting, and all of that, but to try not to interrupt. The church furnished lunch for both crews, so we had a chance to visit. I think, at his request, there are no plaques, though the people who own the homes know he worked on them, because, of course, they also help with construction.
I spent more than 20 years volunteering during summers and on weekends with Habitat, and with a couple of other home renovation ministries sponsored by my church, which, like the Carter's church, Maranatha Baptist, belonged to the more liberal Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. I never met a conservative, Evangelical, fundamentalist, right wing political extremist at any volunteer project, and in fact, my wife and I were talking about this the other day when we heard the news about Carter. These volunteer groups, all made up of Christians from like minded churches, were great places to facilitate Democratic political conversations because there wasn't anyone around who represented the other side.

So many years later and I'm cynical and bitter. It was good to hear the eulogy's . Jason's speech was moving . Such a great man. I read the book about him in the navy he was a hero as well. So many good deeds. Good post
