White House Staff Reportedly Monitored Trump's Trash Because 'He Was Sometimes Throwing Out' High-End Silverware

Source: MEDIAite

An excerpt from The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan’s upcoming book, published on Thursday by the Daily Mail, revealed that White House staff allegedly needed to monitor President Donald Trump’s trash after it was discovered that “he was sometimes throwing out” sterling silver utensils.

The snippet came from Swan and Haberman’s new book on the first 14 months of Trump’s first term, Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump. According to them, staffers responsible for maintaining the president’s private quarters were dealing with a variety of unusual housekeeping challenges.

“A nighttime snacker, the President would frequently leave an array of empty potato chip bags, Starbucks wrappers, and ice cream cartons in the trash, or on the floor,” they wrote.

That habit reportedly prompted closer scrutiny of the trash after aides realized valuable White House items were disappearing along with the food waste. “The staff had to begin monitoring the trash after it was discovered he was sometimes throwing out White House sterling silver utensils,” Haberman and Swan added.

If Haberman "reveals" a story like this, I always wonder what motivated the sources (and how she is so easily gulled...).

Let's suppose Trump actually stole a thousand pounds of silverware (and don't think for a moment he wouldn't): what plausible cover could be concocted to account for the missing forks?

Maybe some fellow senior DU'ers can tell me if this is just a generational thing or what, but I absolutely HATE things on the floor. I don't put blankets, etc. on the floor because the floor is where you walk.

In the same vein, I consider it a very demeaning thing when someone throws something on the floor for someone else to have to bend down and pick up.

Am I surprised that Trump does this? Of course not. He's an entitled asshole slob. But I am not going to stop calling out bad behavior and give him a pass just because he is an entitled asshole slob.

I read one time that they took a bacterial count of purses that ladies had left on the floor and it was astronomical. All the crap you pick up on the pavement is on the floor and now it’s all over your purse. Also, I was once in a theater in Latvia years ago and I had left my purse on the floor, and a lady a few seats from me told me that there is a belief in the country that boxes or bags that are on the ground and left open can be inhabited by evil spirits. I have never left my purse on the floor since that day. And the bottom of my white purses never gather any dirt.

I know this is crazy, but I absolutely HATE that they make you put your bag on the floor in front of you on a plane. It completely grosses me out. I bring alcohol spray with me and spray the floor of my seat before placing my bag there. (There’s alway urine on the floor in a plane bathroom. That ends up on the bottom of shoes and then on the floor in front of an airplane seat!) we also remove our shoes before entering the house. If you’ve seen the sidewalks of NYC, you’d also remove your shoes!
And, now you’ve told me about evil spirits!!!

He actually put garbage in the garbage cans? I assumed someone as entitled as he would just leave it on the floor...you know, for the little people to deal with.

Throwing out the silverware is just icing on the cake.

21. His visit to Windsor Castle according to ETimes September 26, 2025:

Donald Trump’s visit to Windsor Castle has sparked a royal scandal of its own—this time not about politics, but about the state of his guest suite. According to RadarOnline, Trump allegedly left his overnight rooms in “total filth,” shocking royal staff who described the aftermath as “unprecedented.” Sources claim the bed sheets were left “completely orange” from tanning products, while the room was littered with takeout boxes, hair sprays, and fast food wrappers. One insider told the outlet: “This was Windsor Castle, not a roadside motel.” Another claimed Trump had fast food delivered at 2 a.m., leaving the suite smelling of fries and fried chicken by morning. Palace aides reportedly said nearly everything in the room had to be replaced after his departure, with staff “disgusted” by the mess. While the Royal Family has not commented, the claims are already causing a storm online, adding a new chapter to Trump’s controversial history with the palace.

The guy has the cleanliness and habits of a 5 year old.

has this exact same habit. Except he never picks anything up once he's done with it to dispose of it properly. But more than once I've had to go digging in the trash trying to find something he "probably" threw away.

Trump is so far into dementia you can no longer call it "early stages." Every day I contrast what he does with my hubby's actions of the day. Without fail, trump is so much further down the scale of dementia that I praise my hubby for what he, himself, as accomplished during the day.
