Canada has announced a landmark energy agreement with Germany that will see the first-ever long-term shipments of liquified natural gas (LNG) from Canada to Europe in the coming years.
It comes as European nations search for new reliable energy sources and as Canada seeks to diversify trade away from the US.
The deal was announced on Wednesday in Vancouver by Canada's energy minister, Tim Hodgson, who called it "an exciting and important milestone".

For Canada, it is a major step towards trade diversification away from the US. In 2024, virtually all of Canada's LNG exports went to the US, according to data by Canada's energy regulator.

(273 posts)Canadian LNG is a great replacement for Russian LNG. Might be why Russian trolls and bots are trying to gum up the works by encouraging Alberta to separate.

And, it's incumbent on another pipeline to the coast being built and a production facility being constructed. There are several First Nations along the proposed route that are opposed to the pipeline going through their territory, so I'll be surprised if anything starts getting shipped for years down the road.

(133,238 posts)ship collecting LNG off the coast of British Columbia in Canada on the Pacific to Germany through the Panama Canal would be traded for an LNG ship going from the Gulf of Mexico to Asia the other way through the Panama Canal. The LNG ship coming off the coast of BC would then go to Asia, while the LNG ship in the Gulf of Mexixo would turn and go to Germany. Neither ship then has to go through the Panama Canal. This is apparently common. They just swap.

(273 posts)First Nations get on board when given adequate incentive (this dance is not new). The first pipeline (which already exists) is always the hardest. Once the Arctic Ocean opens up shipping to Northern Europe will become much easier.
