The board that produces the Consumer Confidence dropped some bad news shortly after Trump White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett bragged about it to rebut negative consumer sentiment.
On Tuesday mornings edition of Fox Business Networks Mornings With Maria, anchor Maria Bartiromo pressed Hassett on record low numbers on the Consumer Sentiment index, and Hassett responded by suggesting the University of Michigan survey is rigged, and promoting the Conference Boards Consumer Confidence Index as the more reliable:
What they have done is they have somehow devised a political survey that tells us how Democrats are feeling about things.
If you want to look at how people are thinking, you should go to the conference board consumer confidence. The consumer confidence measure is actually the most reliable thing and right now its the highest its been in a year.
But even as Hassett spoke, the Conference Board was preparing to break bad news with a 10 a.m. press release announcing that Consumer Confidence fell .7 percent in May, which the groups chief economist, Dana Peterson, chalked up to the intensification of the inflationary impacts of the war in the Middle East.

Did I want to spend more at the gas station?
No. I had no choice.
I will have to cut back on other spending.

(8,037 posts)is a symptom of optimism about our economic trajectory? Geesh! Give this guy a brain bleach. He's so far out in La La Land, he could never find his way home if someone didn't lead him. But he's really just a hypocrite. They all know the score, they think if they can just say the words often enough people will believe it as the truth, no matter what they really feel and know inside themselves. Unfortunately, I think Maga still falls for the stupid words. Anything to keep from having to think critically for themselves.

(10,497 posts)Those clever and evil liberals -- they created this survey 80 years ago knowing it would be used 80 years later to make Trump look bad!
Of course, Hassett is also lying about the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence index. He said it was at it's highest point in a year, when in reality it was higher as recently as December 2025. Also, in Joe Biden's final month in office (January 2025), the index was at 105.30. In February 2025, it dropped to 100.10, then to 93.90 in March. while it went up mildly in a couple months since then, the high point was 98.70 in July. Consumer Confidence under Trump has not come remotely close to the level under Biden (For the record, it was 112.80 in November 2024 uder Biden, and started dropping significantly immediately following Trump's election).

(10,769 posts).....that people are spending more everywhere because the cost of everything keeps rising? I would have thought that this is simple enough even for Kevin Hassett to understand. Of course, he has to put a positive spin on everything or Trumpy will fwighten the stupid grinning chipmunk.

(8,213 posts)but buying less.
Nothing like paying more and getting less to undermine consumer confidence.
The reasons why consumers are paying more for less don't matter.
Promising things will get better somehow sometime doesn't work.
The electorate is getting more cynical. Vague promises from smirking shills no longer work.
The fallout from low consumer confidence will be felt though.
Discretionary household spending will get nulled, business investment halted, new hires not happening, unemployment will go up.
