A GOP lawmaker admitted that farmers are feeling a crunch under Trump but shrugged off the economic pressures they've felt recently.
CNN's Brianna Keilar pressed Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) to explain how farmers are surviving in a global market affected by war in Iran and a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
"They are so impacted by the strait and the limitations of fertilizer," Keilar told Stutzman, noting he's a fourth-generation farmer. "What that does to the global markets, the cost of diesel, and that kind of thing. And they're really coming off a tough time because of the trade war with China, really hitting a market that was crucial for them. You talk to them, they really just want stability, right?"
Keilar said that farmers "felt that things were going to get a little bit better, and then the rug kind of gets pulled out from underneath them.". Stutzman answered, "You're right," and added that farmers are also struggling to compete with South American soybean farmers. Still, the GOP congressman insisted that farmers are steadfast in their support of Trump.

(14,485 posts)I found this to be correct, the farmers are disillusioned, but they are still pro Trump. However, I spent a great deal of time with the wives and the ones I spoke to are totally over Trump. I marched with many of them in Columbus, Indiana on No Kings day.

(171,257 posts)while in Cincinnati for a conference, I had some free time in the afternoon and hopped a Greyhound bus to Indianapolis.
It was like out of a movie. Just fields and fields of corn and who knows what else. Talk about surreal.

(14,485 posts)so there is other stuff.
Its pretty diverse actually, hilly toward Kentucky, flat and corny in the middle with interesting little old towns that still look like the 50s lives there, big Indianapolis with very wealthy upper class neighborhoods, a flavor of Chicago to the west and Michigan to the north. And guaranteed, if you dont like the weather, stay another half an hour. I swear, we went from 30 degrees to 80, complete with rain and fog and snow and sunshine and wind, back-and-forth for two solid months.

(15,485 posts)I did some shopping this weekend and was HORRIFIED to see the price of 93% lean hamburger was $11.99/lb. Seriously.
There is nothing, nothing, nothing good about this stupid war. Women and children are dying, our military has shot off most of the MICs death toys, and our soldiers, marines, air force people and sailors DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH FOOD.
In a surreal 'be careful what you ask for' we see that the Trump administration has decided to bring back firing squads. And when I talk to younger people, the word 'guillotine' is coming up pretty often. We need to tear down this corrupt, gridlocked and ineffective government and build something out of the ashes that is block-chained so anybody can audit it at any time, and all transactions are transparent.
We must get rid of citizens united, change the rules of corporate governance, impose term limits, pack the supreme court, raise taxes on corporations (do you know they are only contributing 4% of the government's tax revenue while individual working schmucks like us are paying in over 50%?), tax billionaires out of existance and really start building community.
We need to change our hearts and minds to the idea we should be 'good ancestors.' This is my son's mantra, and his voice mixes with voices from many tribal elders and shamans who are saying the consequences of our decisions should be considered seven generations out. Good policy, good ancestors.
Wall Street/Billionaires/Trump - crummy policy, bad ancestors!
