RFK Jr. draws backlash for ripping Medicaid programs that pay people to care for relatives

Source: NBC News

April 23, 2026, 11:41 AM EDT

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparked outrage among disability rights advocates with recent comments alleging widespread fraud in Medicaid programs that pay people to care for elderly or disabled family members — a system millions of Americans rely on to survive.

During testimony before the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee last week, Kennedy criticized Medicaid-funded programs that pay relatives to serve as caregivers, alleging they compensate people for tasks they “used to do as family members for free.” That includes paying them “for balancing the checkbook, for picking up the groceries, for driving somebody to a doctor’s appointment,” he said. “And this is rife with fraud,” Kennedy said, because the federal government has no way “to determine if they actually performed that duty or not.”

Video of the remarks quickly spread across social media, drawing a wave of angry responses from caregivers and disability rights advocates who said Kennedy trivialized the reality of caring for medically complex loved ones while conflating legitimate caregiving with illegal activity.

“That’s insulting,” said Kim Musheno, senior director of Medicaid policy at The Arc of the United States, a national disability rights organization. “It’s insulting to the families, and it’s insulting to the work that direct support professionals do for people.”. That work, advocates say, is far more complex than shuttling loved ones to doctor appointments. For many families, it involves constant, hands-on care for relatives who are unable to live independently — from managing medications and medical equipment to providing continuous supervision for those with significant physical or behavioral needs. The work can be physically and emotionally demanding, advocates say.

2. DUH! Paying a home care giver to take care of a elderly or disabled person saves the .GOV billions

My neighbor is elderly and disabled. Her Grand Child takes car of her 24/7. It saves the State and Fed's tens of thousands per year to not have her in a nursing home. The Grand Child can't work to take care of her so the stipend helps her take care of her Grand Parent.

RFK, JR is ignorant about the reality of taking care of the elderly and disabled.

Most of these far right wingers are ignorant about these issues,
except for those beholden to large corporations, and private equity,
who want to get their dirty little hands those tens of thousands of tax
dollars being saved. After all, how can they pay the bribes.... erm, I
mean contributions to their pet far right wing republicans?

You see.... it is whether or not there is fraud, or waste itself, that bothers them.
Rather, it is the idea that they are not capitalizing on that fraud or waste, themselves....
like they do in their private businesses. If you think this is just partisan politics...

to take care of the elderly who can't take care of themselves. Or paid nursing homes which is a whole lot more expensive. Unless GOP thinks elderly should be thrown out on the street once they can't take care of themselves.

I have cared for my now 102 yo mother since she had a stroke in 2007. I also took care of my dad from ‘07 till he passed in ‘11. I would have done it anyway, but being paid by Medicaid makes it much easier.
What RFK jr doesn’t say, or know, or realize, or have consciousness of, is, the Asset Recovery program. Upon my mom’s passing, the State takes the house, cars and any other assets of the deceased, up to the medical costs incurred under Medicaid
Rich elitists like RFK jr warehouse their elderly in care facilities that cost tens of thousands/month, because they can’t be bothered. Fuck’em ALL.

They’ve never had to worry about food or medical care or transportation or deciding if they can afford to take a day or two off.
I’m honestly really, really sick of it.

Unpaid caregiving IS work. you fool! We all know that people (like our mothers) spent decades caring for loved ones unpaid and that they are told "they do nothing." GAH!.

1. They usually have to live under their loved one's income in order to be able to do it, sheesh you entitled weasel!
2.You grew up with maids and mansions, you have no idea what a financial sacrifice it is and how much is being saved for that unpaid work is, you ignorant freak!.
3. Do you know that unpaid caregiving is considered "Zero income" as a Social Security consideration? Meaning if you spent decades caring for them, SS is not going to pay you a single cent when or if the one from whom you lived on as both your wages, if they die or no longer need you.
3. Do you know, you rat penis eating SOB that even when you have paid work outside the home, on the average as most women do, they LOSE over $450,000 over a work lifetime from perfoming unpaid labor?
4. If all those "free" services given were paid, it would average almost $200,000 a year after considering all the professional care, from chauffer service, cooking, cleaning, nursing, and all the other chores regularly done.
5. If we were to build institutions so everybody can go out there and make rich men richer saying, "Do you want fries with that,"it would cost at least a $$$trillion to build, facilitate, and then pay everybody to do that work, you freaking dummass!
6. After all that work, as many are, they find their nice college degrees mean nothing for employment when they are considered too old to hire unless it is for minimum wage jobs ~ if that.

I have worked in transitional housing and I can tell you I never saw so many middle aged women living in their cars after their loved one dies and after everything is settled financially, they are the last considered and end up on the street. I wondered why that was, but after hearing their stories almost to a "T" it came down to having caregiving taken away reduced them to living in their cars after doing that unpaid that work. . .

Give me a break you GD turncoat freak!
