GOP senator calls to end Iran operations without formal declaration of war

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) said Wednesday he will not support the U.S.-Israeli military offensive in Iran after the conflict reaches 60 days without congressional approval.
Curtis wrote in the Salt Lake City-based media outlet Deseret News that the War Powers Resolution of 1973 limits the presidents period of time to respond to emerging threats. He called the conflict with Iran nothing new, a long-standing, well-organized and well-funded campaign against American lives and interests.
At the same time, here in America, constitutional limits are in place to temper the president from unilateral authority, Curtis wrote. I support the presidents actions taken in defense of American lives and interests. However, I will not support ongoing military action beyond a 60-day window without congressional approval.
Curtis called the 60-day period a fully sufficient window for presidents to take emergency measures in response to a national threat and then remit a decision to the duly elected representatives of the people as to whether a state of war should in fact be declared and continued.

(2,285 posts)I seem to recall from a couple of decades ago that veterans.benefits were less for participating in conflicts as opposed to declared war. Is that right, and if so, has the situation changed?
Id hate to see vets screwed out of their benefits due to word games.

(55,194 posts)We were forced to do this to defend American lives prior to the unilateral war? Did Japan 1941 offer similar justifications? Weren't we negotiating with the existing Iranian government?
I don't see how regime change is a fit. This is civilization obliteration. And religious differences are a concomitant reason.

(15,638 posts)The 60 day window in the War Powers Act gives an irresponsible unethical incompetent POtuS far too much discretion in starting wars that are a lot easier to get into than to get out of.
Serious revision with robust oversight is necessary and can be done without crippling quick response to legitimate imminent threats.

theyve capitulated to an effectively useless body of government that have essentially self terminated their authority.
Republicans are of no use and have no impact to checking a rouge Executive from steam-rolling policy without Congressional approval.
Time for a refund.
