US Vice President JD Vance is set to release a new book, titled Communion: Finding My Way Back To Faith in June.
The 304-page book, published by HarperCollins, chronicles his personal spiritual journey from Christianity to atheism and his eventual conversion to Catholicism in 2019.
This marks Vance's second book following his popular 2016 memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which was adapted on the big screen in a critically mauled 2020 film directed by Ron Howard, starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

Buying or reading Vance's new book is the last thing I would do.

JD Vance's upcoming book on his conversion to Catholicism uses a Methodist church on the cover.

(13,480 posts)He likes the rich life provided by Peter Thiel and has convinced himself that he is presidential material. He is mostly an unprincipled opportunist. How does he rationalize his many lies with Catholic doctrine and the Bibles many verses calling lying an abomination in the eyes of the Lord?

You are as usual the opposite of your book title.

(962 posts)But, was it for a sincere reason if he comes hopping back to Catholicism to please Christian conservatives (probably won't because Evangelicals don't like Catholics) even though his politics are at odds with the teachings of Christ and his affair with Erika Kirk isn't biblical either. If he divorces Usha for Erika the Catholic church won't honor his new marriage, but Evangelicals will so will he switch again?
He has no core values that don't benefit his political and financial situation at the present moment.

(5,351 posts)Heck they didn't let my parents receive communion because my Dad and his first wife divorced long before he married my Mom. He was willing to have the first one annulled so he and my Mom could be married in the Church and they could both still receive Communion, until he found out they expected him to pay a large sum of money so a priest could go to Rome and get permission from the Vatican. Luckily one of the more progressive Priests many years later said he would give my Dad last rights right before he died, and he told my Mom he would allow her to receive communion. I understand both Popes Francis and Leo were and are against excommunication because of divorce.
J.D. on the other hand supports the war, and the brutality against the immigrants, and Pope Leo has made it very clear he stands against both those stances. I think he is my favorite Pope so far in my lifetime!
Unfortunately, some American Priests are giving their loyalty to tsf and his minions rather than the Pope, and more importantly Jesus and God. Likely why J.D. won't face consequences.

(5,351 posts)of the different dioceses. My father died in 1991 and Father Donnelly, our pastor then, was an example for me of what I wished more Priests were like. My parents marriage was in the late 50s. He always said the pastor back then just wanted a free trip to Rome.
I don't blame you for not pursuing it. I will never forget Father Donnelly saying from the Pulpit at my Dad's funeral mass, "People are petty, God isn't."

(11,391 posts)Streiber's Communion was about his family's experiences with aliens, and actually pretty fascinating. There was an illustration of a "grey" (big bug-eyed alien) on the cover. One of the funniest things I (as a one-time Catholic schoolgirl) was a parody illustration of the cover, where the alien was wearing a holy communion veil.
I put more stuck in aliens than J.D. Vance having any belief system other than feathering his own nest.

(113,974 posts)"bastardization" (sorry, but that is the truthful descriptor) of Jesus' message with respect to the poor, the immigrant, war, and every other absolute of true Christianity--not to mention Catholicism, I'd bet your book is going to backfire on you, Vance. And it should.

(5,351 posts)is a faithful practitioner of Catholicism. I haven't gone to Mass in a longtime myself, but being raised Catholic, I agree with the Pope on this opinion. J.D.'s take on the subject in this book is likely to be inaccurate and hypocritical. Hard pass for me.

(1,185 posts)The Pope recent gave two speeches that are diametrically opposed to Vance.
Pope says universal healthcare is a moral imperative.

God does not hear prayers of warmongers.

I do not expect Vance will ever be excommunicated.

(1,904 posts)If he starts to get any recognition at all for a 2028 campaign, Trump will not tolerate it at all because he has to be the center of attention at all times. And he has to keep his Trump 2028 grift going. The feud will be epic.

(1,185 posts)This is a typical right-wing tactic.
Flouting one's religious faith before one runs for president.
Except Trump.
In the words of Bob Dylan's song Positively 4th Street:
"You had no faith to lose and you know it"
It's a little like that scene from Richard III when he is feigning religious devotion and is accompanied by two clerics.
Richard III's goal in the scene is to steal the crown from his nephew.
Press rarely challenges a candidate's avowed religious faith.
For example, why does Vance, a Catholic, not support universal healthcare like the Pope does?
