Rob Reiner's son pleads not guilty to murder in the killing of his parents

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of first-degree murder in the killing of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.

Nick Reiner’s attorney, Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene, entered the plea on his behalf as he stood behind glass in a custody area of a packed Los Angeles courtroom.

Reiner, 32, the third of Rob Reiner’s four children, has been held without bail since his arrest hours after the actor-director and his wife of 36 years were found dead with stab wounds on Dec. 14 at their home in the upscale Brentwood section of Los Angeles.

Reiner appeared in court in an enclosed custody area with his head shaved and wearing brown jail clothes. He talked to his lawyer briefly before the judge began the brief hearing. He spoke only to answer yes to a question from the judge. He was not wearing the suicide prevention smock he wore in his first court appearance in December.

There's no way his lawyers want this to go to a trial.

Even with a plea bargain he'll get life - but maybe w the possibility of parole in 25 or 30.

Is he pleading not guilty by reason of insanity, or is he saying he's completely not guilty?

By pleading not guilty, a criminal defendant is merely saying okay government, time to prove your case against me beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendant is not going to concede that he is factually guilty.

This has zero to do with the defendant saying he didn't do the crime.

After all, the lawyer doesn't know if the guy is innocent or not. Plus, the lawyer is an officer of the court and should be acting professionally, ethically.
