Homeland Security suspends TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is suspending the TSA PreCheck and Global Entry airport security programs as a partial government shutdown continues.

The programs are designed to help speed registered travelers through security lines. Suspending them could cause headaches for fliers.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that “shutdowns have serious real world consequences.” She also said that “TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”

The partial government shutdown began Feb. 14 after Democrats and the White House were unable to reach a deal on legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Democrats have been demanding changes to immigration operations that are core to President Donald Trump’s deportation campaign.

My family is planning on flying abroad in April and May. Hopefully the "partial shutdown" will be over by then, but it doesn't look like there is any chance of resolution at this point.

my TSA precheck was due to expire in March. They actually texted me, but I don't do anything based off a text, so I went to the website to check it out. so it's all privatized and for about $60 or $70, doing it through CLEAR but not having to sign up for that program, I renewed.

I got an email telling me my application was being reviewed and was thinking, uh oh, they're going to have an AI bot scroll through my social media and take it away, but that didn't happen. Got this in my email today:

Hi BARBARA,
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reviewed your renewal submission to the TSA PreCheck® Application Program and determined that you are approved for the Program. Congratulations!

So I'm good for the next 5 years. Though it appears the TSA line will not be available for awhile right now, which sucks. I think that for the sake of at least forcing some humanitarian changes to ICE it's worth the sacrifice. I wouldn't even mind at all if the Democrats said that's not good enough, END DHS.

fuck kristi noem the puppy murderer rancid adulterer propaganda spitting c--t. She's got the money for a 70 million dollar honeymoon suite in the sky but can't help the people who pay that bill?

and if you carry on your computer, all that crap. but IIRC we don't have to take off our shoes anymore.

it's worth it imo. this cannot be what brings Democrats back to the table caving in to the republicans.

honestly when I consider what others are being put through by this administration, it's very small potatoes imo.

CLEAR is a business. They must be profitable. Someone’s making money. Pre Check is a benefit to citizens without as much cost to consumers. It’s one more time that privatization is allowed to succeed as a socially beneficial government program falters.

I can remember when Russia kept a choke hold on Russians and anyone wanting to enter Russia had to go through very rigid checks and then would be followed around.
I don't think the "detentions" of U.S. citizens has been amped up to the level they are actually planning for yet. The early stages we are seeing are still easy for people to downplay.

during a period when the workers needed to staff the extra lines or provide escorts, are being required to work without pay is hardly implementing control.

It may have the effect of making those with means to pay for the courtesy features angry, so they exert pressure on Congress to cave. Those with means to buy courtesy features have a lot more ability to exert pressure than those without means (those impacted the most by the lack of healthcare subsidies).

Noem doesn’t even try to make sense of the “necessity” of taking groups of travelers who have already been through a screening/vetting process and requiring them to now be screened again at the airport. If she really was concerned about the impact of the government shutdown on TSA, the pre-screen would at least alleviate some of that. But she and Rump don’t want that. They want maximum chaos and inconvenience, so much so that it will piss off travelers and they’ll pressure Dems to cave and submit to R demands re: ICE and CBP. The insanity is on purpose.

28. TSA PreCheck will remain operational, despite earlier suspension plans
Sun Feb 22, 2026, 01:51 PM

The TSA says its expedited screening program will continue for now during the DHS funding lapse.

?s=20
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/dhs-pausing-tsa-precheck-global-entry-programs-funding-lapse-rcna260114

TSA PreCheck will remain operational for now, a spokesperson for the agency said Sunday, reversing earlier indications that the Department of Homeland Security’s expedited screening program would be suspended amid the department’s funding lapse.

However, the TSA “will evaluate on a case by case basis and adjust operations accordingly” depending on “staffing constraints,” the spokesperson added in a statement.

“Courtesy escorts, such as those for Members of Congress, have been suspended to allow officers to focus on the mission of securing America’s skies,” the statement said.

The Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program allows vetted passengers to forgo customary security check-in lines for quicker passage. U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry, which offers similarly rapid check-ins for Americans at U.S. ports of entry, was also suspended. The TSA spokesperson did not address that status of that program on Sunday.

The suspension of both programs, first reported by The Washington Post, was supposed to start at 6 a.m. ET on Sunday, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem blamed congressional Democrats and said the lack of funding endangers Americans and puts personnel in a financial bind.

The programs are designed to help speed registered rich travelers through security lines.

That is the more accurate statement. I have been lucky enough to use the 'PreCheck' before and the only thing I saw was that rich people get to skip some of the line and some of the procedures solely because they had the money to pay for it, not for any security reasons. If you can pay, you get the special treatment. It has nothing to do with being 'safer' and everything to do with being wealthy.
