Jeffries: Supreme Court tariff ruling a 'crushing defeat for the wannabe King'

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) called the Supreme Court ruling against a majority of President Trump’s tariffs a “crushing defeat for the wannabe King.”

“The Supreme Court decision striking down the harmful Trump Tariffs is a big victory for the American people,” Jeffries posted on the social platform X on Friday morning. “And another crushing defeat for the wannabe King,” he added.

Trump responded to Jeffries’s critique during a press briefing at the White House on Friday afternoon, saying the Democratic leader “doesn’t even know what a tariff is.”

The Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that the Trump administration’s implementation of sweeping tariffs on the U.S.’s global trading partners under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was unlawful. Jeffries has led congressional Democrats’ push against these tariffs, recently urging legislators to pass a House resolution to repeal the Trump administration’s tariffs on Canada. Six GOP lawmakers joined Democrats to vote for the measure.
