Veterans stunned by VA plans to build hundreds of 8-by-8ft sheds in California for ex-service members to live in

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has sparked anger after unveiling plans to build hundreds of tiny homes, which campaigners said were little more than sheds, on its West Los Angeles campus. The move, which comes after veterans successfully sued the agency to force major housing expansion on the site, is designed to solve homelessness among ex service members, but has been criticized as only offering them temporary accommodation.
VA officials revealed the proposal during a court hearing this week, describing the small structures as an initial step toward complying with a federal order requiring the agency to create thousands of new temporary and permanent housing units for unhoused veterans. But the veterans behind the lawsuit say the plan falls far short of what they intended.
One of their attorneys, Roman Silberfeld, told the court there was a disconnect between what the plaintiffs had asked for and what the VA is now proposing, noting that they talk about the sheds. We never talked about that, the LA Times reports. The VA has already placed more than 100 of the 8‑by‑8‑foot units on the campus to house veterans who had been living in a nearby encampment.
But these structures, increasingly used as quick‑build homelessness shelters, have long drawn criticism for being cramped, hard to navigate for people with mobility issues, and unsuitable for long‑term stays. VA counsel Robert Fleck told the court the VA has sufficient funds to complete the temporary housing by the end of this year, but not the permanent housing, The Times added.

Of course with all the money we spend on useless and absurdly costly military stuff it's quite obvious we have the money to house homeless veterans in comfortable apartments. Collectively, we just don't want to.
Nobody should be homeless in this wealthy nation, not veterans, not the unemployable, not the mentally ill, not people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol... nobody.

(57,713 posts)I bet they could rent out those sheds for $2k/month.
What's unforgivable is that extremely valuable property was donated in 1888 to house homeless vets, and despite that legally binding condition on the conveyance of the property to the government, for about the last 100 years it's been used for everything but that, thanks to the rich NIMBY's in the surrounding neighborhoods, and the VA's neglect of veterans.
There should be decent furnished high-rise apartments built for vets on that property that allow them to live like regular human beings, not shed dwellers.

How is this even manageable? Nobody has room for anything in these little huts. Where do they park their cars? Oh I see, they don't have cars. So where is the public transportation? How do handicapped veterans in wheelchairs maneuver in these tiny rooms? What if someone has to call an ambulance? What if there's a fire, flood or some other emergency?
We have questions ....

(57,713 posts)And there is a huge VA Hospital & Medical Center on site, at 11301 Wilshire Boulevard, just steps from the tiny homes, and it has mental health services:

https://www.va.gov/greater-los-angeles-health-care/locations/west-los-angeles-va-medical-center/
The location is perfect for homeless vet housing. But the housing should be decent furnished high rise apartments, not sheds. The sheds are not the best use of that valuable land, and not how a human being should live. They'd get a lot more vets housed, and with a lot more dignity, if they built a couple high rise apartment buildings.
These sheds are only 64 square feet. A typical bachelor/studio apartment is 300 to 600 square feet.

Yrs ago, I had friends we visited who lived in a yert community in the Grand Teton area. Everyone had their own yert but communal bathrooms and kitchens. However, yurts can be huge and charming.

(38,317 posts)1, they're an immediate way to bring homeless individuals inside into a dry, conditioned space. they offer privacy, both visual and acoustic, and a place to keep belongings. they can be mass-produced.
but 2, they're a band aid on a chest wound. there needs to be a massive supportive housing construction effort to address the national homeless crisis, but this nation is absolutely unwilling to do that.
frankly, it's shocking that a fed agency is doing ANYTHING to address the crisis.

(166,447 posts)I know The Guardian had updated their story right before I posted it and I posted the latest at the time (and they are a UK publication). But further down near the bottom is this -
Trump has also faced criticism in the US. The former Nato supreme allied commander James Stavridis said hundreds of allied troops had died under his command on the frontlines in Afghanistan. I honour their memory every single day, said the retired US Navy admiral.
Nicholas Burns, a former US ambassador to China, described Trumps remarks as shameful, adding: We need our allies but are driving them away.
I think the issue is more that 45 and the loon GOP's strategy of "flood the zone" and "move fast and break things", has meant a lot of important details for each of these stories, get pushed to the bottom of the priority for reporting but often bubbles up later once the dust clears.

My issue is that there is little provision for "permanent" housing for them thanks to the endless obsession for building exhorbitant "McMansions", because like the huge SUVS, the builders claim the smaller homes are loss leaders for them, profit-wise.
