Preschooler and three other students detained by ICE, school district leader says

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

Liam Conejo Ramos, a preschool student at Valley View Elementary in Columbia Heights, was transported by federal immigration agents to Texas with his father, according to his school district.

A 5-year-old preschool student was taken with his father by federal immigration agents shortly after arriving home from school, Columbia Heights school leaders said Jan. 21 — the first time a Twin Cities school district has publicly confirmed a student being detained by ICE since Operation Metro Surge began.

His detention, school leaders say, marked the fourth time a student from the district has been detained by federal agents in recent weeks as escalating immigration enforcement directly affects more Twin Cities schools and students. Roughly 3,000 federal agents are in Minnesota as part of what the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has described as the largest immigration enforcement operation in history.

According to the National Immigration Law Center, ICE’s policy is that arresting officers should allow a parent to make arrangements for their child’s care. It’s unclear if they did in this situation.

ICE has arrested four children in same Minnesota school district

"Why detain a 5-year-old? You can't tell me that this child is going to be classified as a violent criminal," said superintendent Zena Stenvik.

..................They say Liam Ramos' family is following U.S. legal parameters and has an active asylum case with no order of deportation.

The school also said they don't know what happened. They want the public to get involved as this is happening to students all across the state of Minnesota.

"We are asking to please reach out to your congressional representative to ask for an immediate and peaceful resolution to this occupation," Stenvik said. "Please help us and other schools to again be a safe place where all belong and all succeed."

Meanwhile, district officials say ICE continues to hang out around their schools — keeping kids, parents and staff on edge.

This is Liam Ramos. The five year old that ICE took from a Minneapolis school and sent BY HIMSELF WITHOUT HIS FAMILY to a detention facility in Texas. There are monsters among us and they are wearing masks, carrying guns, and work for the US government.

cruelty. I can’t stop thinking back to my teaching experiences with all of the wonderful migrant children and their families. I had many migrant children during the regular school year and also taught a special migrant summer school program. My god I can’t imagine having a horde of secret enforcement thugs show up and kidnap children and their families! The absolute terror thrust upon them and the fallout domino agonizing effects on classmates, staff, extended families, neighbors, friends……..I am heartsick. Whatever moral force in resistance, persistence, and insistence we can all collectively muster is paramount. Thank you for posting and sharing the latest in a long line of unbearably cruel acts we are witnessing. Whatever fresh hell tomorrow may bring, we will never be silent or lose our resolve. Be well and strong, DU Family.
