House Speaker Mike Johnson (R‑La.) stunned a group of his own members on Tuesday by shutting down any chance of an amendment vote on extending enhanced ObamaCare subsidies — a decision that has left moderate Republicans in tight districts fuming ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“I think it’s idiotic not to have an up‑or-down vote on this issue,” Rep. Mike Lawler (R‑N.Y.) said Tuesday, emerging from a House Republican Conference meeting, according to The Hill. He added: “It is political malpractice.”

Lawler, one of the moderates pushing to extend the expiring subsidies set to lapse Dec. 31, didn’t hold back. “I am pissed for the American people. This is absolute bulls‑‑‑,” he said, capturing the frustration of members worried about the impact on constituents.

I love the “surprised” posturing of fence-sitting Republicans here, as if this wasn’t the plan all along.

Sure... they're concerned about the impacts on their constituents. More to the point, they're concerned their constituents will boot them out of office once those voters see how high their premium, deductible, and copays rise.

Cruelty is the point for a party (or person) who states that neither food nor healthcare is a human right.

and his job as well.

More resignations will be taking place in the House. Soon because constituents in the Republican districts will see their ACA premiums triple and they will be pissed knowing that their Rep. did not fight for them.

House Democrats will be pouncing like hungry Lions. More power to them.

There is no viable GOP alternative.

Time is of the essence.

Some people are in middle of cancer treatments and many can ill afford a spike in premiums.

And the GOP alternatives have been tried before and what they are offering will not cover one cancer drug during chemotherapy.

I am currently in maintenance treatments of lymphoma; in my third remission.

Treatments for every 3 weeks cost just under $1 million/year; about half of that is paid due to discounts my provider gives the insurer.

They may think they'll lose in November anyway, so... and a couple (need 5) more moderate R-DINOS won't hurt til '26. And their constituents get to keep healthcare. They may even vote for them again in November!

The vote may not happen right away, and even if it gets the votes to pass the House, it may go no further... but he can no longer shut down the vote.
