US social media requirements for foreign visitors could have 'chilling effect' on travel, industry group says

WASHINGTON, Dec 15 (Reuters) - A group representing the U.S. travel and tourism industry warned Monday that a proposal to require millions of foreign visitors to provide social media handles used over the past five years could have a "chilling effect" on visits to the United States. The proposed change, announced in a U.S. government notice last week and expected to take effect on February 8, would require travelers from countries in the visa waiver program to submit the social media data.

"If we get this policy wrong, millions of travelers could take their business and the billions of dollars they spend elsewhere, only making America weaker," the U.S. Travel Association said Monday in a statement. "One thing that isn’t in question: this policy could have a chilling effect on travel to the United States."

Applicants for immigrant and non-immigrant visas have been required to share that information since 2019. The Trump administration has taken a range of steps to tighten vetting of foreigners entering the U.S. The requirement for additional information stemmed from a Trump executive order issued on January 20 calling for visitors to the U.S. to be "vetted and screened to the maximum degree," according to the notice published by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The visa waiver program allows travelers from 42 countries, mostly in Europe, to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. They must complete an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) form, which under the change would require social media handles. The U.S. would also require all email addresses used over the last 10 years and names, birth dates, residences and birthplaces of parents, siblings, children and spouses, the notice said, which is open for public comment for 60 days.

If were a foreign national who had planned a vacation in the US, I'd cancel my plans right now with a big fat FUCK YOU.

Stupid.

I've said for awhile now -

What is used to keep people out . . . Can be used to keep us in.

We are at the 'papers please' point on the timeline.

soon, maybe, other countries will retaliate with similar measures for U.S. visitors to their countries (after all, who wants a bunch of sweat-pants-wearing yahoos with gun fetishes in their country?).

That accomplishes the same thing as our govt requiring that info from us, but being able to blame it on 'them".

add in a few more miles of border fence and mission accomplished: money for nuthin and slaves for free! (sorry Mr. Knopfler)

During the Cold War only the communist countries used Jim Crow as a battering ram.

The same countries that spit in South Africa's eye - ignored the plight of Black Americans.

They won't retaliate.

This regime will fall. Their lack of retaliation now will be (MUST BE) our reason to ignore them "reasoning" with us.

I.don't think America as we have known it is ending now. I think we can end it after the Regime. We have to or they will rise again. And if we don't? The clamoring from the Blue State Alliances will make it inevitable.

I'm in NJ. We are NOT coming together and pretending none of this happened and we are 'One' AmeriKKKa again. By the time this ends, I believe our state's newly created Chief Operating Officer will have defined and implemented a way for New Jersey to stop giving our money away to people that hate us.

Mikie was clear - if we don't get a piece of the pie - we don't give this Regime the money to bake it. Once we get it back - we aren't just going to let Ron Johnson and Bimbo Boebert get the opportunity to take it back from us.

It's enough. I guess an Ann Coulter was right . . . we're godless liberals - in New Jersey. If we had wanted a lower case nice Governor - Ras Baraka would have run the board in June.

to avoid the US at all costs. It is not a safe place for anyone, especially non-citizens and anyone with a complexion darker than Stephen Miller's cadaver-like skin tone.

Other countries could retaliate against US visitors by putting them through hoops like this, not because they care about our opinions but as an FU to Trump since by now many of them despise him.

I posted on another strand last week that US tourism employs around 20 million people. Trump is killing many of their jobs because he thinks no one should have the right to criticize him or note how exceptionally stupid he is. In an already slowing economy, it’s not very smart to kill off foreign tourism.

...water is wet. Who the hell in their right mind would jump through ANY of these hoops just for a vacation or a work-related conference, especially if it meant increasing your risk of getting blown to bits in a mass shooting or being grabbed off the street by masked goons and disappeared down a memory hole where your family and lawyers can't even find you?
