Anthony Geary, an eight-time Daytime Emmy winner for playing Luke Spencer on the long-running soap opera General Hospital, died due to complications from a medical procedure. He was 78.
His husband, Claudio Gama, confirmed the news to TV Insider, saying, It was a shock for me and our families and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.
Geary grew up in Utah, moving to Los Angeles in the late-1960s to pursue a career in Hollywood. (165,686 posts)And I remember being a part of a group-watch of that "wedding" episode on "General Hospital".
It always seemed to me that those who were regulars on the Soaps, had a literal "bread and butter acting job". Those shows went on daily, for like forever, and had to be daunting but good practice.
R.i.P.

(2,032 posts)That whole Luke and Laura thing was HUGE back in the day. Everybody I knew watched that show. Now I'm not so sure it would fly these days.
At any rate, RIP Anthony Geary. 78, another gone too soon. What a year this has been for celebrity losses.

(7,438 posts)Rob last night, Tony today. Take me now, I'll be in good company!
Man, I remember every afternoon there was a whole group of us who always made sure we had the time slot open, and we'd meet in the dayroom at the college to watch General Hospital together. Some of you may understand when I say it was such a HUGE part of my young adult life! The Luke and Laura story line got really convoluted at times, but hea... we all thought it was great fun, and most of us there were wishing WE could find the kind of love story they had. The only thing, for me, that comes close to the General Hospital experience is Dark Shadows... and 5 of us young girls would rush to my house to watch it every afternoon. We'd usually roll into my front door as the first ominous notes of the program started.
I felt really bad (sad) last night at the news of the Reiner's. I thought I'd run through my cat pics on my phone and clean them out. Seeing the babies in their growing years is always good for smiles. Then I ran across the last picture I took of Mom at Christmas last year. It was taken Dec 26, and she died on Jan 3. Then I REALLY felt bad. Took a couple of sleeping pills, turned on Supernatural to lull me to sleep, and winked out for the night.
We've lost so many excellent people this year, it tears me apart. My favorite band, Kansas, might as well change its name for all the originals that are gone. And I don't think I'll ever get over losing Robbie Steinhardt. He, of the torn coveralls and full head of curly read hair, playing violin at my Homecoming Dance. It's just too much. All my heroes are leaving... and leaving me with these evil idiots who should have expired a LONG time ago.
RIP, Luke. You filled a hole a lot of us had in our young, angsty years. Rest in Power.

(5,041 posts)I watched General Hospital for a long time. The 80s were by far the best years of that show, and though Geary's character, "Luke," and Luke's relationship with Laura were controversial, it was undeniable what a fabulous actor Tony was and that he and Genie Francis had a fascinating on screen chemistry.
This is hard especially so soon after Tristan Rogers', Denise Alexander's and Leslie Charlson's death. So many of the actors who were some of the best the show had to offer are gone now.
I remember being on campus the day the episode aired where Laura returned to Port Charles, after everyone mistakenly believed she was dead when instead she'd been held captive by the Cassadines. When Luke finally saw her, you could hear cheers coming from every dorm on campus, the show was that popular!
Thank you Anthony for sharing your talent and keeping so many of us entertained.
