The Trump administration issued a notice of default to the group that manages Washington's three municipal golf courses, escalating a behind-the-scenes struggle over who will control some of the District's most visible public land and effectively positioning the president to operate its public golf properties.

Why is the White House carting dirt to a golf course? It’s a D.C. mystery

By: Alan Bastable
October 28, 2025

Dirt by way of a White House construction project has been accumulating at D.C.'s East Potomac Park.

Visitors to East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., might have noticed a new landform taking shape over the past several days: a massive pile of dirt abutting one of the three municipal golf courses on the property. .

But not just any dirt. ... The rubble has been coming from the White House, where a President Trump-commissioned East Wing renovation project is underway, reportedly to the tune of $300 million. Since the middle of last week, dirt has been arriving by the truckload to the federally owned park, which is home to two nine-hole courses and the main attraction: an 18-hole layout called East Potomac Golf Links, which was designed by Walter Travis and dates to the 1920s.

The earth-moving was first reported by the Washington Post and has been confirmed by GOLF.com, but exactly why the White House is carting the debris to East Potomac’s nine-hole White course, toward the northern end of the property, is unclear. ... The Post reported that some of the discard will be used to add mounding to East Potomac Golf Links. But National Links Trust, the non-profit that operates and has plans to develop the course, has not commented on the matter and is referring all inquiries to the Department of the Interior. (The Department of the Interior has not responded to multiple emails from GOLF.com.)

When the National Links Trust landed the lease to the course, plus two other D.C. munis, in 2020, it announced plans for a Tom Doak-led restoration of what is a reversible design, meaning each nine can be played in two directions. More than five years later that work still hasn’t begun, but there are no indications that the organization’s long-term vision for the property has changed.

White House Adviser: Tiger Woods Is Part of D.C. Public Golf Project

Tiger Woods has agreed to help with the renovation of Langston Golf Course, a historic public track in Washington, D.C., a White House adviser told FOS.

The Courier-Journal

Tiger Woods has agreed to help with the renovation of Langston Golf Course—a historic public track in Washington, D.C., which opened in 1939 as the city’s first golf course specifically built for African Americans—a White House adviser told Front Office Sports.

Langston is one of three public golf courses (alongside Rock Creek Park Golf and East Potomac Golf Links) in D.C. owned by the National Park Service, which in 2020 handed over operations of the courses to the National Links Trust, a nonprofit created in 2019, as part of a 50-year lease.

In 2024, the NLT launched the Nation’s Capital Project, which seeks to revitalize and rehabilitate those three historic municipal golf courses. Famed golf architects Gil Hanse (Rock Creek), Beau Welling (Langston), and Tom Doak (East Potomac) have all signed on to provide pro-bono architectural services.

Work at Rock Creek is underway and likely won’t be finished until 2027. That project’s estimated cost, paid for by funds raised by the NLT, is between $25 million and $35 million. Once the Rock Creek renovation finishes, Langston will be up next.

When in DC, while visiting my son I have played this course often. A fun course open to the public, with views of the Washington Monument, it is known not only for the views, but a nice course over all. It should not become a course open only to high rollers. I need to keep my invectives about the idiot in the oval gold plated bordello to a minimum.

Both sources in the OP are paywall sites. "A notice of default" sounds a bit like the courses (or the group that runs them) have defaulted on a loan - if Trump is sticking his butt in, then that would have to be loans from the federal government? Is that what has happened here?

34. A bit better explanation from the Daily Beast - it's about "promised renovations"
Sat Dec 13, 2025, 01:42 PM
Saturday
The group has been told by the Interior Department that they’ve fallen behind on promised renovations and have been served a default notice that could see them lose their lease.

A spokesperson told the WSJ: “National Links Trust respectfully disagrees with the characterization that we are in default.”

https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-eyes-another-over-the-top-dc-vanity-project/

More at the link - the NLT has been using obsequious language with Trump to keep the toddler from throwing a tantrum, but it sounds like he just wants to control All The Golf. I trust this group I'd never heard of far more than I trust anyone associated with Trump, so I presume they're telling the truth, and Trump and his idiots are lying.
