Egg prices may increase up to 20% as top farm tests positive for bird flu: USDA

Source: ABC News

January 28, 2025, 6:16 PM

One of the nation's top egg producers confirmed that one of its farms tested positive for cases of bird flu over the weekend, the company said. Rose Acres Farms, which claims to be the second-largest egg producer in the United States, released a statement on Tuesday saying that it had detected cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at Cort Acre Egg Farm in Seymour, Indiana.

With farms across the U.S. testing positive for bird flu cases, the USDA predicts that egg prices will rise up to 20% this year due to a shortage of eggs. Poultry found to be sick with avian flu need to be culled, and their eggs also need to be destroyed.

"We are working with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health and the state veterinarian on best practices to combat the risk of spreading AI to other birds," the Rose Acres Farms statement said. "We are continuing to monitor all of our facilities."

It explained that the risk to other birds, including migratory waterfowl, backyard poultry and commercial poultry, is high; however, "the risk to people remains low."

2. White House blames Biden for killing '100 million chickens,' refuses to admit Trump broken vow on costly eggs

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/white-house-blames-biden-for-killing-100-million-chickens-refuses-to-admit-trump-broken-vow-on-costly-eggs/ar-AA1y1OIb

Various excerpts:

... but President Donald Trump vowed in November that he would “immediately” reduce prices.... Trump promised at a press conference two months ago: “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one.”

But now Vice President J.D. Vance has since said the administration needs a “bit of time.”

“As far as the egg shortage ... the Biden administration and the Department of Agriculture directed the mass killing of more than 100 million chickens which has led to a lack of chicken supply in this country,” [White House Press Secretary] Leavitt said when pressed about the ongoing high price of eggs, despite Trump’s promise ... “We also have seen the cost of everything, not just eggs - bacon, groceries, gasoline - have increased because of the inflationary policies of the last administration,”
(bolding added)
Apparently they didn't consider Biden's policies inflationary before the election when tRump was making all these "immediately" and "day one" promises or something I guess, and they hadn't heard about bird flu before and the mass culling of chickens when the promises were being made... it all adds up somehow,

but is a "global commodity" full of all kinds of speculators.

The price was already up the past year due to climate issues (e.g., droughts) and like oil, any "threats" that hang over the production will spark an uptick in the futures prices.

I've never had bird flu among my flocks and they stay outside most days. They just wander around my paddocks and go to their coop at night. I had to put in a heat lamp in the coop when it went to 4 degrees F last week. And now my hens are laying twice as much.

I hope I don't jinx it but my hens have never gotten any diseases, not even mites. It's usually the weather that get my chickens now and then, usually the oldest can't take the heat or cold. My oldest now is about 6 years old and she's still laying. My livestock guardian dogs protect them from most predators.

Though some backyard flocks have gotten bird flu, it's more common on commercial farms.

to look at the list of ingredients on the packages of various food products in your cupboards and fridge. Many of them will list eggs as an ingredient.

This doesn't just affect the price of eggs. Long term this is going to affect food prices in general.
