White House tells federal workers they can quit now, get paid through September
Source: Washington Post
The White Houses Office of Personnel Management sent an email blast Tuesday to civilian government employees offering them an easy way to quit with pay through Sept. 30, the most sweeping effort yet by the new Trump administration to shrink the ranks of the federal workforce.
The email instructed employees to reply to the message saying they want to resign if they would like to take the offer, which would provide the incentive for workers who accept by Feb. 6, said an Office of Personnel Management spokesperson. Not all employees will be eligible, according to the spokesperson, who said some of the exemptions will be up to agency heads. Additional carveouts exist for immigration officers, some people in national security-focused roles, the Postal Service and the armed forces, the spokesperson said.
The email blast comes less than a day after the White House announced a freeze on federal spending, which plunged the country into confusion and chaos, with food safety, crime prevention and housing assistance programs, among others, on the line. And it caps days of speculation after the personnel management office first start sending emails to groups of federal workers from an hr address, saying it was testing a new distribution system.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(35,207 posts)By accepting, they may lose their time-in-service and other long term retirement benefits. I am betting its the old fire or get someone to resign in the eighth inning of a nine inning game.
This happens all the time in the private sector and it looks like they want to take it public.

(3,099 posts)I don't know where that confusion is coming from. There are 2 million people being offered this deal. The point is they want everyone working in office 5 days a week and they hope/figure this will get a small percentage of them to quit rather than return to the office full time. They expect at most 10% to take this offer. That's 200,000, not 2 million.
In reality, I expect far less than 10% to take the deal

Trump administration offering buyouts to nearly all federal workers
The Trump administration is offering millions of federal workers the option to accept buyouts through a government-wide deferred resignation program.
The offers come as President Donald Trumps administration pushes federal employees to return to the office five days per week.
The White House expects up to 10% of federal employees to take the buyout, an official told NBC News.
Autumn
(46,997 posts)that deal? Quit your job, stay home and get paid for 8 months? Just a fraction of people taking that offer would cause problems.
Wiz Imp
(3,099 posts)But the point of this is NOT to get rid of the entire federal workforce. Trump announced shortly after the election that they would require ALL employees to work in the office 5 days a week, ending telework. They believed this would cause a large number of people to quit. That didn't happen. So now they came up with this "offer" to try to give an incentive to get more people to quit. I don't think it will work.

(26,351 posts)There's no money budgeted for this scheme. So, unless it's in the new budget, which doesn't exist yet, they would maybe get paid until March.
LiberalLoner
(10,286 posts)Is that what you are saying?
Because all of these people are currently federal employees, being paid. Right now.
What they are proposing is to allow them to continue to telework as they have been doing so far, at the same rate of pay, until September when they agree to resign with no severance pay.
littlemissmartypants

All that Trymp offered is that they can telework until September, then they must leave. They will be paid monthly during that time for their services. And can still be fired during that time. It is a trap.
Plus, lump sum buyouts are illegal. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/tim-kaine-trump-federal-workers-buyout_n_6799a2bfe4b09dcf5694ef54

Yes, we have a good backup plan and about a million and a half in savings which we hope will enable us to move to a lower cost of living nation, and survive. Our passports are valid.
I figure we have as good a hope of surviving as the next person. Which admittedly is maybe not all that good.

(16,435 posts)Special incentive program and voluntary early retirement are actual federal programs for trimming the career civil service workforce.
Under them, career civil servants can get a bonus, like around 15k, to retire early. It's usually targeted to specific series that the agency has too many of like clerks, for example. Sometimes there are age and service time eligibility restrictions, too like age 50 with 20 years in. Not sure if there's a pension penalty under FERS like there was under CSRS for retiring under age 55.

In reality, we need more federal workers, especially at the IRS and the USPS. I suspect many workers will accept this offer because who wants to work for a deranged president.

"The president has no authority to make that offer. Theres no budget line item to pay people who are not showing up for work. This is a guy who made this promise to contractors again and again and again when he was a private business guy. Oh, come work for me on my casino. Come work for me in a hotel. Were going to do a handshake. Were going to do a contract. The contractor does the work. and then finds out they get stiffed.
So my message to federal employees who receive this is, yeah, the president has tried to terrorize you for about a week and then gives you a little sweetheart offer: If you resign in the next week, were just going to pay you for doing nothing for the next seven months. Dont be fooled. Hes tricked hundreds of people with that offer. If you accept that offer and resign, hell stiff you just like he stiffed the contractors. He doesnt have any authority to do this. Do not be fooled by this guy."
