Social Security boost may not come for more than a year for many Americans

Source: CBS News

Updated on: January 27, 2025 / 1:37 PM EST

The Social Security Administration says millions of retired teachers, firefighters, police officers and others with public pensions may have to wait up to a year or longer to reap the benefits of the recently passed Social Security Fairness Act.

The newly enacted law requires the agency to adjust benefits for more than 3 million people, including calculating retroactive payments and future benefits. But the law did not provide additional financing or staff to help implement the law or deal with the increased workload, the Social Security Administration (SSA) noted in an update Friday.

"SSA's ability to implement the law in a timely manner and without negatively affecting day-to-day customer service relies on funding," according to the agency. "Though SSA is helping some affected beneficiaries now, under SSA's current budget, SSA expects that it could take more than one year to adjust benefits and pay all retroactive benefits."

Ongoing staffing shortages, compounded by a hiring freeze since November 2024, will make the task of servicing people "more difficult," SSA stated. All Social Security recipients, including those not affected by the new law, will face delays and increased wait times as SSA contends with the new workload, according to the agency. "We thank the public for its patience," it added.

I figured this would take some time as they identify those who are eligible and then back-calculate, etc.

It is the same with Medicare payments - which, if late, will ruin people's credit.

Social Security and Medicare's operating expenses are very low, and they do very well with them—cutting them MORE will render the agency unable to service new signups or on-time payments, much less a bunch of new back payments atop that.

Constituents of both Dem and MAGAt congresscritters will be YOWLING on the phones and via email if this happens.

ONLY THEN will the fucking MAGAt cowards push back on SHitler at all. Because his DOGE-boy dog & other billionaire friends' threats to primary them will be an equal threat to their own constituents' being unwilling to re-elect them because they support this fucking shit.

which is set by its own law with a specific calculation assigned.

This is related to the repeal of the law that authorized "WEP" (Windfall Elimination Provision) & GPO (Government Pension Offset) for those public service employees who worked in other positions where they paid into and were eligible for SS but come retirement time, had their SS reduced because they were also receiving a pension/annuity from a government job that (at least at the time they worked for that entity) didn't participate in SS (and also applies to survivors of those affected by that) - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143365290

SS rep is going to call me soon to take a new claim for me on spouse's SS record since I have never filed due to the Govt Pension Offset. I called the 800 number and made apptmt about 3 weeks ago and rep I talked to said all they would need is to see the marriage certificate that I can bring in to the local office. Hoping they can start the benefits sooner than if I was having to wait for manual adjustment of existing benefits.

Those that voted for him cheer, except for when they go to try to call someplace like Social Security and then there’s longer than wait times which was already long long long time then they’ll complain that it takes too long to get a hold of somebody unfortunately, those that voted for him, and allowing this to happen instead of more staffing being added, we have to go down with the
