Trump directs US government to override California water policies if necessary
Source: Reuters
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday ordered the federal government to override the state of California's water-management practices to bolster firefighting efforts.
-snip-
His order directs the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to deliver more water and hydropower through the Central Valley Project, a network of dams, canals and other infrastructure, even if that conflicts with state or local laws.

"Trump is either unaware of how water is stored in California or is deliberately misleading the public," Newsom spokesperson Tara Gallegos said. "There is no imaginary spigot to magically make water appear at a wildfire, despite what Trump claims."
Trump's order also directs the White House budget office to see whether it can attach conditions on federal aid to the state to ensure cooperation.

The "Counter-Secretary" of the Interior or of FEMA or the Counter-Administrator of the EPA should address this madness, not just California officials.
I suggested this months ago and was mocked for being unrealistic. Well reality is here. I am with you.

(15,378 posts)Very short of it:
The whole thing is purely an irrigation and drinking water issue and has nothing to do with fighting fires. We have plenty of water for that and always have.

(675 posts)The reason Trump is doing this has nothing to do with water or the fires. He is trying to exert federal power and control over California because Gavin Newsom stands up to him and Trump tries to destroy his enemies. That is it. Trump could give a damn about the water or the fires. Logical arguments are irrelevant to him (although they might not be irrelevant to the public). The way to stop Trump is to engage in pure power politics. I trust Gavin Newsom will try to find a way to block Trump. Newsom is smart and tough and we must back him to the hilt. One likely defense is State's Rights. We may be able to block Trump in the courts. It is not the only solution, but it is one weapon that we have.

"The Wonderful Company has been able to expand their agricultural operations through their ownership of the Kern Water Bank.[6] The Kern Water Bank is a man-made underground reservoir in the Central Valley.[7] The Department of Water Resources spent $74 million building the water bank, and it is the largest of its kind, capable of holding one million acre-feet of water.[8] Through what some sources have called backroom negotiations, in 1994 the water bank was transferred under what's known as Monterey Plus Amendments[9] from the public to the private ownership of the Resnick's.[8] It was passed from the Department of Water Resources to the agribusiness-dominated Kern County Water Authority, and from there to the Kern Water Bank Authority. The Kern Water Bank Authority consists of four water districts and a private company, Westside Mutual.[7] Westside is a shell corporation owned by Paramount Farming which is a subsidiary of The Wonderful Company.[7] It is primarily through Westside that the Resnicks own 57% of the Water Bank.[10] News outlets, academic papers, and advocacy groups have criticized The Wonderful Company for its possession of what was originally meant to be a public asset, and the monetary benefit they have gained through it.[11]
The Wonderful Company has been criticized for its aggressive consumption of water in the drought ridden state of California. The company has expanded its business even as California residents have faced water shortages and the water ecosystem has been irreversibly damaged.[11] Residents of the Central Valley, while the target of the company's charitable giving, suffer from an acute water crisis. It is also claimed that the company lobbies to privatize the state's water and funds opposition research on the impact of farming on the drought."

(4,969 posts)City systems are built to supply water for household use and are limited to what they can deliver to multiple house fires. When one or more homes burn down, there are no faucets left to stop the flow coming from city sources, which lowers pressure further down the line. The US government, especially under Trump & his sycophants can't bend that reality to their will.
He is driven by megalomania and has NO grasp of reality. He will say whatever he thinks will make people hate the people he hates and is threatened by. He is insane and getting more dangerous by the minute. It's only been one week and a few hours and he has proven he is fucking insane.

The president, who has assailed Californias leaders over wildfires, issued the directive in an executive order that was dated Friday but released on Sunday.

The White House on Sunday released an executive order by President Trump that laid out a plan to exert the federal governments role in Californias complex water management operations and claimed its authority to overrule state officials.
The order, dated Friday, comes after Mr. Trump traveled to the state to see the devastation from wildfires that have been raging in Los Angeles for weeks. It put formal directives behind Mr. Trumps steady criticism of Californias leaders and their response to the fires.
In a section titled Overriding Disastrous California Policies, the order tasked more than half a dozen agencies with finding ways to circumvent federal and state laws that control various aspects of water management in California. It also directed the Interior Department to make decisions about how to supply water around the state, notwithstanding any contrary state or local laws.
More confrontational language in the order directed federal officials to stake out their authority without necessarily working alongside the state officials who manage the states reservoirs and plan for droughts and fires.
