Newark business "raided" by ICE agents, mayor says, multiple people detained

Source: CBS News

Updated on: January 24, 2025 / 12:00 AM EST

NEWARK, N.J. — The mayor of Newark, New Jersey, said federal Immigration agents "raided" a local business Thursday. Mayor Ras Baraka said in a statement that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained multiple people, including United States citizens, a U.S. military veteran and undocumented individuals.

According to Baraka, the agents did not produce a warrant. "This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution," Baraka said in part in a statement. "Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized." Newark is considered a so-called "sanctuary city." A spokesperson for ICE told CBS News New York in a statement late Thursday that it conducted a "targeted enforcement operation at a worksite today in Newark, New Jersey."

"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may encounter U.S. citizens while conducting field work and may request identification to establish an individual's identity as was the case during a targeted enforcement operation at a worksite today in Newark, New Jersey," the statement read. "This is an active investigation and, per ICE policy, we cannot discuss ongoing investigations."

The owner of Ocean Seafood Depot, located at Adams and Delancey streets, told CBS News New York that about one dozen ICE agents came in unannounced at around 11 a.m. Eastern Time, asking to see documentation of his employees. "They didn't have a court order or, I mean, I didn't even ask," he said. The owner said his manager tried to show his veteran's card, but the agents did not accept it.

Certain commonalities will emerge about these raids.

This raid was undertaken in the middle of the day. Plenty of witnesses. A business. In a sanctuary city.

Good for the Mayor for having the courage to release such a strong statement.

ICE raids, detainments carried out at Newark business, mayor says

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Reports of ICE detaining migrants have rattled cities like Newark, New Jersey, where the mayor revealed that agents carried out a raid at a business on Thursday.

The federal raid at Ocean Seafood Depot in Newark's Ironbound section caught its owner Luis Janota by surprise.

He told Eyewitness News that agents asked for documentation for three workers and took them into custody when they couldn't provide it.

"I feel like we have to be a country of law, but we have to go after bad people, not working people," Janota said. "These are family people. These are people who show up to work every day."

There's no word yet from ICE of Homeland Security as to why these individuals were detained, but the move has infuriated local officials.............................

My guess is it will be 90% blue States and the red states will be left alone.

they raided one of Trump's Golf Course Resorts, (Bedminster?) at the beginning of his first term, They found lots of undocumented workers. Housekeeping, groundskeepers, restaurant, etc
The most interesting discovery was cartons of BLANK Social Security Cards, and a small printing press used to print info on them....
WTF ever happened with that?????????????

A Mar-a-Lago raid would be even more fun.......When he first took office in his first term, he said he had alot of those "special Visas" called H1B???? for workers down at maralago and was going to create more, so he could get more for his worker.....

That category of Visa was intended for highly qualified people from other countries to come to America for their expertise.....
Not for people who mow grass, do dishes, or make beds, etc .....It was not intended for the Uber Rich and Corporations to get hard working people, significantly cheaper than just hiring U.S. Citizens which is what it turned into.

That type Visa is only good for them to work for that employer. If they quit and try to get a higher paying job, when they are caught they get deported immediately.......

Two notable people in Trump's reach, illegally came to America, and illegally worked in America With NO Visa, or a Fraudulently obtained Visa.....Now that that fact has been documented, the law says they should be immediately deported and sent back to their original country, and never allowed any type of Visa ever again. Even if somehow they currently are holding a visa that is legitimate. They entered the U.S. Illegally and lied about it to obtain a real visa. Those two people are his current wife Melanoma, and his buddy Elon Musk. Who knows how many more in his CABAL did the same......

a DU'er who posted a thread yesterday about a blusky post what people should do when approached they need to see a warrant with a signing of a judge. I'll see if I can find that thread to post.

This is not right, who's to say that they won't go into more blue states. More pushback is needed. State Mayors and Governors need to be more aggressive. Churches, schools and hospitals should be off limits. This gets me so angry.
