CNN Reportedly Set To Lay Off Hundreds of Employees as Trump-Era Restructuring Begins

CNN is set to fire hundreds of employees on Thursday as the network prepares to restructure itself for the second term of President Donald Trump.

According to CNBC, sources at the network said the layoffs with help CNN lower production costs and consolidate essential teams. Moreover, CNN plans to completely restructure its TV lineup and expand its digital subscriptions.

Moreover, the network may move shows that are produced in New York City or Washington D.C. to Atlanta, Georgia, where the cost of production is cheaper. Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company, recently invested more than $70 million into the network to help expand its digital operations, according to CNN CEO Mark Thompson.

Although the job cuts are very extensive, they will not affect CNN’s recognizable names and anchors. The network has a large number of staff that totals about 3,500 across the globe. Back in October, CNN formed a digital paywall that charges users $3.99 per month to view content.

Via con dios, CNN. You became unwatchable a long time ago, three or four owners ago. AOL/Steve Case era when you dropped world coverage for nightly shouting matches.

Nope, not gonna miss ya.

CNN+ went nowhere. Now they want to paywall online content. I think that will be a tough sell too. If someone is willing to pony up for a news site, are people really going to pay for CNN instead of (or in addition to) the NY Times, WAPO, or WSJ?

Some day they're going to have to face up to the fundamental problem... their stuff just isn't that good. And cuts/layoffs are unlikely to make it better.

I remember his basic remote broadcasting operation was to have 2 employees, a car, and a sat phone, stationed in each of a number of countries around the world. I remember cruising down the Nile River in Egypt on the way from Luxor to Aswan back in 1992, where there was a TV in the cruise boat's lounge that was tuned to CNN International.

Now it's a bloated mess with a RW loon agenda.

Any moves they make will attract ZERO new viewers. Paid subscriptions? For their horrible content? I don't think so.

Their digital version will be competing with Bezos’ Washington Post for biggest suck-up to Trump. Aside from some excellent magazines like The Atlantic and smaller news outlets like Mother Jones and Pro Publica, we’re left with one major national news outlet, the NYT. And even they are playing Trump’s game with their news headlines never criticizing him. Some of their op eds do criticize him, but who knows how long that will last. I believe Trump thinks that he no longer needs the media because he can do anything he wants, so who cares what the media says.

All the dangers of a Trump presidency became evident in less than a week. He has declared at least two laws to be null, birthright citizenship and the right to seek asylum.

He, or his Project 2025 surrogates, have already crippled parts of the government by dismantling DEI efforts and encouraging coworkers to snitch on one another. I can see people being reported simply for hiring a minority or woman instead of any white male who applied.

He has started his military purge by firing the head of the Coast Guard.

He has stopped the communication of any federal health data to the public and eliminated any information about abortion and healthcare for women.

He has declared that federal law will recognize all people as male or female, which denies the right of existence under the law for LGBTQ+.

He has ordered the NIH to stop making research grants. I believe the purpose here is to politicize the grants by sending federal dollars first to research universities, qualified or not, in red states. Research universities in blue states will be required to revamp their curricula to teach Republican and religious propaganda or their medical research teams will receive no grants. This will set back cancer and other medical research for years, and that is the research most needed for improved treatment of cancer, diabetes, and other major medical conditions.

Hs DOJ has been ordered not to enforce civil rights actions and to stop any pending agreements to curb excessive police force. In other words, all civil rights violations will simply be ignored.

All that in less than a week. I’m sure I’m forgetting something, but the speed with which these changes have been made fall in line exactly with the Project 2025 plan to start remaking the government into an authoritarian theocracy on day one. The media really failed the country by refusing to give much credence to this manifesto for tyranny or to explain to voters what was in it and what its implementation would mean first them.

all Media will be downsizing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why?

Because FOX will become PRAVDA here in the U.S. A "PRAVDA", not unlike Russia, where FOX becomes the ONLY STATE sponsored propaganda source and rhetoric for any and all information and news that Trump and the REPUBLICons want you to see or hear

I fully expect, as the New RepubliCON government takes over, The United States of America, will become The Corporate States of America, or The Corporate Tyranny of America.

BTW.....In his first term, Trump ordered two new AIRFORCE ONES. He detested the light blue exteriors, the ones that Jacquie Kennedy designed. They take years to build, and he had hoped to defeat Biden and enjoy his new jets. With all the difficulties Boeing had, they still aren't finished. The ones Trump ordered, he decided to paint them with horizontal Red, White, and Blue stripes. Amazingly similar to the Russian Flag, but in a different order. Biden cancelled that paint job. Now, Trump will be able to re-instate the Horizontal Stripes, and maybe now will put the stripes in the same order as the Russian Flag??????

simply to broadcast whatever Trump says, you really don't need a lot of people.

I bet if they gave Elon a couple of weeks, he could deliver a BlitzerBot that provides all the insight, illumination, and journalistic integrity as the human version.

I am sure some of the people in all networks are decent people. But they are not journalists and they are not doing the job the founding fathers expected of the media. So it really is time for all of them to go. I hope those who actually want to do real journalism find rewarding positions in the new media world. But for those who are just looking for a paycheck while continuing to be nothing but obsequious, no sympathy from me. Get a job selling real estate or insurance or cars or something. Let's save our energy for the 5% of them who have a real commitment to defend our democracy and Constitution.
