Meta admits some people can't unfollow Donald Trump on Instagram

Meta says that people have been automatically left following Donald Trumps account and admitted that some of them are unable to stop. It suggested that technical problems meant that some people were currently unable to stop following Mr Trumps official presidential account. But it made clear that users had not been automatically made to follow those accounts in the first place, as has been suggested.
Since Donald Trump became president, he also gained control of the official @Potus and @VP accounts on Instagram and Facebook. That led to complaints from users that they were following Mr Trump or his vice president JD Vance, despite not having asked to, since they were following those accounts when they were fronted by other politicians.
However, some including singer Gracie Abrams said that they had not only been forced to follow the account but were unable to stop doing so. She said that she had been required to unfollow the account three different times, and had been forced to block the account to ensure that she was not associated with it anymore.
Now, Meta has admitted that some people are having trouble unfollowing those accounts, but suggested that it would be fixed. It may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through as these accounts change hands, said Meta communication director Andy Stone, in a statement in which he addressed the complaints more broadly.

Meta is pushing back on claims from social media users who say they've been forced to follow Facebook and Instagram accounts belonging to U.S. President Donald Trump, his wife Melania Trump and Vice-President J.D. Vance.
Stone (META Communications Director) writing on Meta's Threads platform, said the confusion was due to the previous administration giving control of the official @POTUS account to Trump's team.
Anyone who had been following @POTUS during the Biden administration, for example, would still be a follower after control of the account had been handed over to the new administration.
Stone did not directly address claims that some users had to repeatedly unfollow those accounts, but said it "may take some time for follow and unfollow requests to go through as these accounts change hands."
The article goes on to say this happened in the transition from Obama to Trump

This OP is mentioning the issue with Instagram and whatever quirks happen with that.
The other thing is the "unfollow" vs "block" and it seems, at least here on DU, that people were automatically not just "unfollowing" with their accounts but also "blocking" right away vs what Gracie apparently was willing to do (expecting just the "unfollow" to take care of the problem).
But the LAST piece that you mention - the "transition accounts". There are accounts that explicitly say WHITE HOUSE and then accounts with the President's name and the "@whitehouse" (or whatever extra they added). The "generic" account had been used for "official" announcements, although the "personalized" accounts were also being accepted as "official", as long as they were the @whitehouse version (and not the actual personal/campaign social media account).
So it would seem idiotic to "rename" say the "Barack Obama@whitehouse" account to "45@whitehouse", and leave all those posts in there "blended together", rather than just create a new account with a new name, but still "official" (with the @whitehouse)..
I can see the "generic" "White House" account going from administration to administration, but not the others.
