Thousands of Southern California residents were under evacuation orders Wednesday as fire crews battled the out-of-control Hughes Fire near the town of Castaic, a suburb in the foothills and mountains of northern Los Angeles County.
The fire grew to more than 5,000 acres in two hours, and residents in the immediate vicinity of Castaic Lake are under mandatory evacuations, according to the LA County Fire Department. The unincorporated community of Castaic is about 15 miles northwest of the city of Santa Clarita and borders the Angeles National Forest.
As of 3 p.m., the fire was 0% contained and impacting both Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, Cal Fire said. Approximately 19,000 residents are under evacuation orders, while 16,000 are under evacuation warnings, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson told CNN on Wednesday afternoon. .............................................

A fast-moving wildfire in northern Los Angeles County exploded mid-morning Wednesday, quickly growing from 50 acres to more than 5,000 acres in heavy brush near Castaic Lake. The fire has now closed all lanes of the busy Interstate 5 corridor in the Santa Clarita Valley, with drivers told to use state Route 126 as a detour.............................
..............Footage from the area shows massive smoke plumes billowing into a blustery sky, with air support on hand attempting to drop water along flaming ridge lines. Some area schools have been evacuated or closed, including College of the Canyons.
The Santa Clarita Valley just to the south is a heavily suburban area with more than 200,000 people spread across dozens of subdivisions and micro-communities, as well as historic buildings like Saugus Cafe, the oldest restaurant in Los Angeles County. To the north of the fire are chaparral-covered mountains and small wilderness communities like Lake Hughes, where the fire gets its name.........................

Ventura County strawberry workers are harvesting in heavy smoke from the Hughes Fire. We remind workers their employers have to provide them with respirator masks if the AQI exceeds 150. Stay safe!
