Trump launches savage attack on bishop who asked for 'mercy' for minorities
U.S. president calls the clergywoman a "Radical Left hard line Trump hater," "ungracious," "nasty" and "not compelling or smart."
Donald Trump sat stone-faced throughout Mariann Budde's sermon and later told reporters he didn't think it was a "good service," while JD Vance appeared incredulous at the bishop's remarks. Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

U.S. President Donald Trump hit out Wednesday at a bishop who directly called on him to show mercy to immigrants and LGBTQ+ people.
During the inaugural prayer service Tuesday at the Washington National Cathedral attended by Trump, Vice President JD Vance and their families, the Right Rev Mariann Budde delivered a sermon in which she appealed to Trump to be merciful to minorities, "some who fear for their lives." (1)
"In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now," Budde said, referring to "gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families." ... Most "immigrants are not criminals," she added. "They pay taxes and are good neighbors."
Trump hit back in the early hours of Wednesday on his social media platform Truth Social, calling Budde a "Radical Left hard line Trump hater" who is "not very good at her job" and demanding an apology. (2) ... "She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart," he said. ... "Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one," he added.

I must have misread the Bible all these years because I realize now you supercede it's teachings. Forgive my transgressions. Forgive my unworthiness o glorious one! You are right in all matters especially when it comes to morality. Because you got elected you are supreme in all matters going forward and no one should ever challenge you or your political righteousness. You are the supreme law of the world. You are the crown of creation. You are the true Son of God.

Alabamas senior senator on Tuesday claimed parents who raise transgender children are committing child abuse, suggesting that trans kids should live in fear of their parents, not the government.
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tubervilles tweet on Tuesday came in response to the Episcopalian bishop who implored the Trump administration to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now.
{snip}
Tuberville suggested trans children should be more scared of those who raise them than the government. ... These trans children should live in fear of their parents and the sick people that enable those guardians. Its child abuse. An absolute disgrace. the senator tweeted while posting the video of Buddes remarks.

Religion must be celebrated, protected and venerated, Trump apparently thinks just so long as the faith community is telling him what he wants to hear.

Hours later, shortly after midnight, the president abandoned subtlety and published a far more forceful rebuke to his social media platform. It read in its entirety:
The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!
Theres no point in fact-checking every error of fact and judgment in the presidents online harangue. The Rev. Edgar Budde is not a so-called bishop; there is no giant crime wave; Trumps line about mental institutions has long been ridiculous, etc.....
Take a moment to imagine what would happen if a progressive House Democrat called for an American religious leader to be kicked out of the country for delivering a sermon he or she disagreed with.
Whats more, whether Republicans appreciate this or not, the more they whined about the bishops sermon, the more likely it became that the public would hear what Budde had to say. The Streisand Effect is, after all, a real phenomenon.
Lets also not forget that for many congressional Republicans, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, there was a Biden-era scandal about officials targeting and harassing religious leaders. It was nonsense, of course, though its hard not to notice that these same GOP leaders have far less to say about their allies targeting Budde......
The post-inaugural national prayer service, however, shed light on the limits of the presidents approach: Religion must be celebrated, protected, respected and venerated, Trump apparently thinks just so long as the faith community is telling him what he wants to hear.

But he has no way to put a muzzle on all of us. It's driving him mad that most people aren't fawning over him when he turns on the news.
The Bishop is exceptionally brave. Her sermon was one of civil disobedience, and I speak for myself when I say how inspiring it was. It came from a place of love for those who have no voice or who are marginalized. She saw an opportunity and took advantage of it.
We can all learn from this.
