Elon Musk's Controversial Salute Prompts Calls to Ban X Links on Reddit

Source: Newsweek

Published Jan 21, 2025 at 8:42 PM EST

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's controversial gesture on Inauguration Day continues to have ripple effects, including in online forums.

Musk made headlines on Monday when he made two enthusiastic back-to-back arm gestures during President Donald Trump's inaugural festivities that immediately sparked criticism and comparisons to a Nazi salute.

Why It Matters

Musk dismissed the allegations, writing on X, "Frankly, they need better dirty tricks. The 'everyone is Hitler' attack is sooo tired."

But that hasn't stopped the backlash, including on Reddit. Over the last 12 hours, users on scores of subreddits have proposed banning X links from the popular discussion forum. Newsweek reached out to Musk for comment via SpaceX in an email on Tuesday night.

There is no denying what Musk is.
When we use his products, we are supporting him,
AND his beliefs/behavior.

I can't believe DU'ers are refusing to leave Twitter, coming up with all sorts of excuses as to why they refuse to delete their accounts.

I got an account on Twitter years ago so that I could follow all of the fire agencies. That is where they post their info. But a lot of people have migrated to Bluesky, and there's plenty of info there now.

Twitter deleted, not supporting Musk.

DU needs to ban Twitter.

It’s easier just to stay with the old than try to learn new. Learning new can be frustrating and complicating, requiring much energy and thought.

and even predictable that fascists reveal their fascism while simultaneously denying their love of fascism. Trump's inner circle has been doing this for years. Musk has the necessary arrogance, exposure, selfishness, and lack of humility that places him in the forefront of the domestic fascism movement.

The GOP doesn't abhor fascism. Because Trump is the only avenue for them to maintain power, they're along for the ride. They'll take fascism and dictatorship because it's all they have. They're embracing it. Any references to decency and morality are short-lived. It's raw power that provokes them to be "in love" with fascism. They'll stick with it until the house that they're building crumbles to dust.

Quite frankly, this moment in our nation's life was a long time coming. We never had the fortitude to seriously restrain the wealthy from overtaking the levers of governing. Little by little, over the decades since WWII, politicians have shown only minor resistance to the rise and dominance of corporatism. In essence, the power of money has overtaken all other factors in political life. Bribery (Trump believes that bribery should be legal.) has overtaken "lobbying", unregulated corporate behavior is now redefined as a new "freedom", reduced taxes on corporations and the wealthy are the new avenues to "American prosperity", and the working and middle class can go to hell. This is where we are.
