Bishop rebukes Trump at service, asks him to 'have mercy' on LGBT people, illegal immigrants
Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde says for some who pray 'it's not just the loss of an election, but a loss of equality'

By Michael Gryboski, Editor Tuesday, January 21, 2025

The Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde speaks during the National Prayer Service at Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 21, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Tuesday marks Trump's first full day of his second term in the White House.

The Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, delivered the sermon at the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the cathedral.

Near the end of her sermon, Budde directly addressed Trump, who was seated in the front row alongside his wife, first lady Melania Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance.

"In the Name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now," Budde stated. "There are gay, lesbian, and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives."

"The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meat-packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals. They may not be citizens, or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals."

He was taught greed, power, hate, and disdain for those deemed "unfit".

Episcopalian isn't even a real religion. Their services don't include the handling of venomous snakes.

Disclosure: This Bozo was raised Episcopalian, now lapsed.

Trump: Inauguration prayer service was ‘not too exciting’

by Alex Gangitano - 01/21/25 3:24 PM ET

President Trump said Tuesday the prayer service for his inauguration, when the reverend called on him to have mercy on transgender children and immigrant families, wasn’t too exciting.

Reporters asked the president when he returned to the White House after the service what he thought of it, and he responded, “What do you think? Did you like it? Did you find it exciting?”

“Not too exciting, was it? I didn’t think it was a good service, no. Thank you very much. They can do, they can do much better,” he added.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde made a plea to Trump, who was sitting in the first pew at the National Cathedral during the service, to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared.”

During a prayer service at Washington's National Cathedral Tuesday, the Episcopal bishop of Washington directly confronted President Trump while he and Vice President J.D. Vance were seated in the front row.

"Let me make one final plea, Mr. President," Bishop Mariann Budde said in her 15-minute sermon. "Millions have put their trust in you. And as you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now," said Budde, as she appeared to look towards the president. ... "There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives."

This came just one day after Trump issued a slate of executive orders, including one which has a section dedicated to "recognizing that women are biologically distinct from men," one that declared a national emergency at the country's southern border and issued several others related to immigration, including one attempting to do away with birthright citizenship. ... Budde challenged these orders and much of the rhetoric that has surrounded them.

"The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings; who labor in poultry farms and meat packing plants; who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals, they – they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation. But the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors," said Budde.
