David Lynch Dies: 'Twin Peaks', 'Blue Velvet', 'Elephant Man' & 'Eraserhead' Visionary Was 78

Source: Deadline

One of Hollywood’s worst weeks in just got worse. David Lynch, the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Wild at Heart, The Elephant Man and others who also created the Showtime drama Twin Peaks, has died. He was 78.

His family posted the news on social media.

Lynch had been diagnosed with emphysema. Sources told Deadline that he was forced to relocate from his house due to the Sunset Fire and then took a turn for the worse. In an interview with Sight & Sound magazine last year, Lynch revealed that due to Covid fears and his emphysema diagnosis, he could no longer could leave the house, which meant if he directed again, it would be remote. He then followed up the interview with a post on social that he “will never retire” despite his physical challenges.

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” the family’s post reads. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”

Not exactly, but with E. Jean Carroll and Stormy Daniels (and Ivanka?), etc., he does come closer to that kind of person, Leland Palmer, than any president I can think of.

Eeeee...

Reuters - 'Twin Peaks' creator and filmmaker David Lynch dies at 78

January 16, 20251:51 PM EST

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK, Jan 16 (Reuters) - David Lynch, the American filmmaker, writer and artist who scored best director Oscar nominations for "Blue Velvet," "The Elephant Man" and "Mulholland Drive" and co-created the groundbreaking TV series "Twin Peaks," has died at age 78, his family said on Thursday.

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch," a statement on Lynch's Facebook page said. "There's a big hole in the world now that he's no longer with us. But, as he would say, 'Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'"

With his visually stunning, disturbing and inscrutable works filled with dream sequences and bizarre images, Lynch was considered a master of surrealism and one of the most innovative filmmakers of his generation.

He received an honorary Academy Award in 2019 for his lifetime achievements.

The enigmatic artist and devotee of transcendental meditation preferred not to explain his complex, bewildering films, which included "Wild at Heart," the 1990 Palme d'Or winner of the Cannes Film Festival, the 1977 horror film "Eraserhead" and the 1997 mystery "Lost Highway."

All the nudie stuff, I thought that it exemplified what the film was claiming to criticize (Hollywood exploitation and trashiness, etc.).

Twin Peaks managed without the nudity ("Fire Walk With Me" had some nudity, which I also found unnecessary...).

I'm a die-hard Twin Peaks fan. My husband and I made the trip to North Bend and Snoqualmie Falls in 2022. I even met one of my closest friends through Twin Peaks fan fiction.

He had emphysema and recently evacuated from his house to his daughter's house during the wildfires. My guess is that the wildfire smoke did him in. Ironic, since he was always fascinated with fire and smoke.

See you in the trees, Maestro.

Ate at the inn, had a "damn fine" (the menu said that!) cherry pie! etc. Surreally great experience (sunset until close to 9-10 p.m. maybe?).

Thanks for sharing. God bless.

P.S. Back c. 1990 I went to a Twin Peaks event dressed as "Bob" (denim jacket, long hair, etc.)

Indy: Do you have any memories of Missoula at all?

Lynch: Um, no. Not really. But I've heard people say it's a great town and I should go visit it because it's got a real mood. And I want to go find the hospital I was born in and see if it brings back memories. I remember it was two miles from Hell's Canyon to St. Patrick Hospital. That's it. I'd like to get back there.

Indy: And it's been said that memories from your childhood influenced a lot of your work, especially "Twin Peaks," but I suppose that wasn't from your two months here.

Lynch: That's true, but no. Not from Missoula.

Indy: Now that locals know the films aren't specifically about Missoula, it may open up a whole new series of interpretations.

Lynch: It should. They should go into that world and have that experience. Each time you view a movie it's a different experience.

--

Despite the references he sprinkles in, Twin Peaks is based on a lot more than just Missoula, Montana. I'm guessing his understanding of the PNW comes from his time in Idaho and Washington more than the first two months of his life.

Plus, Mark Frost is doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

The Laura Palmer stuff comes from the project they were writing right before it, GODDESS, based on the death of Marilyn Monroe and all the sinister secrets under the surface.

But man, he sure knows how to nail both the coziness and suffocation of a small town, right?

I should have run away right then. I broke up with her later by jumping out of her moving car.

She was not the only David Lynch fan I dated.

I'm not sure how any of this reflects on me, the companionship I sought out as a troubled young person, or David Lynch, but thanks for the memories... I guess.

My wife hates dark movies. I appreciate that.
