Some immigrants are already leaving the US in 'self-deportations' as Trump's threats loom

Source: Associated Press

TRACY, Calif. (AP) — Michel Bérrios left the United States a few days before the new year, giving President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign for mass deportations a small victory before they even started.

A former leader of a Nicaraguan student uprising, Bérrios had been in the U.S. legally, with nearly a year remaining under President Joe Biden’s unprecedented use of humanitarian parole authority for citizens of certain vulnerable countries. But harsh talk during the U.S. election campaign filled her with anxious memories of hiding from authorities back home.

Advocates and immigration experts who have noticed such departures say Bérrios’ decision to leave the U.S., despite her legal status, shows how uncertainty and threats have led a growing number of people to leave the U.S. before Trump takes office on Monday.

There isn’t data on these departures, but history has seen other eras of public backlash that drove migrants — with or without legal status — out.

She knows she has a target on her back. Can you imagine waking up every morning with that kind of uncertainty? I wouldn't want to be picked up and sent to my neighboring city let alone arrested, detained, and shipped off hundreds or thousands of miles away.
Any of you that have ancestors that have experienced this and voted for the incoming administration, shame on you.
Stephen Miller, aka Rat Face, I hope there is a special kind of hell waiting for you here on earth.

The Laken Riley Act, will terrorize them even more because it requires indefinite detention without due process.

Please call your Senators to urge them to vote no on this unconstitutional horrific bill.

The Rs created this bill for show never expecting it to pass. To their surprise the Dems took the bait and helped pass it in the House twice.

Now Schumer got steamrolled last night on amendments.

Rs: sure Chuck, just vote for the bill and we'll allow some amendments later. Nope, didn't happen.

The Dems getting played and capitulating on this is so depressing.

I asked if they were going on a nice vacation. They said no they were preparing to leave the US. I felt so bad for them.

If you’re one of those with a target on your back, I imagine the stress and fear can become intolerable. Welcome to America.

Academics have also signaled their intention to depart the US, like Sigmund Freud escaped Austria in 1938. Celebrities with money can afford to self-deport, like the ones listed below.

But the poor have to scrape their money together and find accommodations overseas, possibly like the family noted above buying a large suitcase.
