DeSantis picks Florida attorney general to replace Marco Rubio in Senate

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday said he would appoint Ashley Moody, his states attorney general, to replace Marco Rubio in the Senate, elevating a close ally.
Moody, 49, was elected to the state attorney generals office in 2018, the same year DeSantis won the governors mansion, and has been a vocal defender of DeSantiss policies and actions. President-elect Donald Trump is nominating Rubio for secretary of state, creating an opening for DeSantis to fill until an election in 2026.
Moody was considered the favorite to replace Rubio. Trump and his allies had advocated for Trumps daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, who co-chaired the Republican National Committee this past election cycle putting DeSantis in an awkward position. But DeSantis continued to signal interest in other candidates, and Trump said publicly last month that he did not expect DeSantis to pick her. Lara Trump said Dec. 21 that she was removing her name from consideration.
Moody previously worked as a federal prosecutor in Florida and became the youngest judge in Florida when she won election to the Circuit Court in Hillsborough County. She is a fifth-generation Floridian whose father and late grandfather also served as judges.

(5,607 posts)She also once sued Trump and won a settlement. It seems like DeSantis appointed her because she could likely beat Gaetz in a primary. She's only 49, and the Repubs would be crazy to not put her on the Judiciary committee.
After DeSantis dropped out though, it seems like she joined the Trump faithful. In November, Moody urged the 11th Circuit to affirm the dismissal of Jack Smiths indictment of Trump. She also joined the 2020 effort before the Supreme Court to overturn the election of several states. Trump also endorsed her in 2022 for her Florida Attorney General run.

(2,510 posts)Because she is the presumptive Republican nominee for Governor in 2026. Wonder what they have up their sleeves now? I guess if she runs and wins, she'd get to name her replacement in the Senate.

(27,848 posts)There are a number of hats expected to go into the ring and I wouldn't consider her any higher up than the Lt. Gov for that race... and now they don't have to square off.
Between them - I'd say Gaetz is effectively blocked from higher office
