Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal brings hope, but Gaza bombing continues as hostage families hold their breath
Source: CBS News
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that a "last-minute crisis" with Hamas was delaying Israel's final approval of the long-sought truce. Israeli media reports suggested the delay was likely down to Netanyahu trying to buying time to deal with nationalist hardliners in his cabinet who've always fiercely opposed any agreement with Hamas.
Mahmood Kurdia, who's been living in the southern city of Khan Younis after being forced from his home in northern Gaza, said he couldn't wait to get back, even though he knows he has virtually nothing to go back to.
"I want to go back home to see my family, my neighbors and my home. Even though my home is just ruins now, but I still want to see it. I want to remove the rubble and put my tent on the top of the ruins and say to Israel that I'm back," he told CBS News on Wednesday." Like everyone else, however, he was keenly aware that peace, if it is coming, is still three days away.
Israel appeared to ramp up its strikes Wednesday evening, killing more than 70 people between the ceasefire deal being announced and Thursday morning, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health and the enclave's Civil Defense rescue agency. Both agencies told CBS News that the dead including 21 children and 24 women.

(35,491 posts)have you actually read his (admittedly stupid) quote? It doesn't say that - it's being inferred.

He then added: Gazas waterfront property, it could be very valuable, if people would focus on kind of building up livelihoods, you think about all the money thats gone into this tunnel network and into all the munitions, if that would have gone into education or innovation what could have been doneits a little bit of an unfortunate situation there, but I think from Israels perspective I would do my best to move the people out and then clean it up, but I dont think that Israel has stated that they dont want the people to move back there afterwards.

(3,715 posts)Maybe at slightly lower intensity, but dying and no real security none the less. A very tragic situation. In most cases I don't support the notion of US disengagement in international matters. In the Middle East I almost wonder if we just backed out and away-- $$, military and middle man diplomacy-- could it cause enough of a shock that they may actually get serious and stop killing each other long enough to realize seriously sitting down and negotiating in good faith is their only hope, I almost feel like we are a well meaning family member that enables the alcoholics in the family to continue drinking.

(137 posts)From AP: "Netanyahu signaled there were issues with the deal shortly after U.S. President Joe Biden and key mediator Qatar announced it was complete. That created a dual reality: War-weary Palestinians in Gaza, the relatives of hostages held there and world leaders all welcomed an agreement, expected to begin Sunday, even as Netanyahu said it was not yet finalized. "
I'm really not sure why Biden and Blinken would go on TV and announce this deal when Bibi and his right-wing goons have not even agreed to it. Bibi came to the US and trashed President Obama in a Joint Session in 2015 then hen trashed President Biden in a Joint Session in 2024, Why the fuck would anyone trust one word that lying sack of shit says? Israel under Bibi Netanyahu is not a "friend" to the United States.

(35,491 posts)1. Hamas' list of prisoners to be freed has names that are unacceptable to Israel.
2. Ben Gvir and Smotrich are both threatening to pull out of Netanyahu's coalition over this agreement, which would collapse the govt.
I don't know which is the real problem.
