Ramping up criticism of Israel, Pope Francis calls situation in Gaza 'shameful'

Source: NBC news

Pope Francis on Thursday stepped up his recent criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, calling the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave “very serious and shameful”.

“We cannot in any way accept the bombing of civilians,” the text said.

“We cannot accept that children are freezing to death because hospitals have been destroyed or a country’s energy network has been hit.”

Francis, leader of the 1.4-billion-member Roman Catholic Church, is usually careful about taking sides in conflicts. But he has recently been more outspoken about Israel’s military campaign against Palestinian militant group Hamas, and has suggested the global community should study whether the offensive constitutes a genocide of the Palestinian people.

I'm simply linking relevant stories to the situation in Gaza, which I and many here on DU find appalling. You don't have to read them if you don't want to. It's a free country!

Gaza.

Which was easy enough to get verified.

You didn't. The end result is that you linked to a false account of what the Pope said.

You know this now. And I don't believe that you have any intention to either correct your post to reflect it, or to delete the post.

"the situation in Gaza" being "shameful".

Here's the link, knock yourself out:
https://www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/speeches/2025/january/documents/20250109-corpo-diplomatico.html

The address mentions violations of human rights in Sudan, the Sahel, the Horn of Africa, Mozambique. Congo, Myanmar, Haiti, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Syria and Lebanon by name, but not Gaza.

But... spin, spin, spin!

Similarly, I renew my appeal for a ceasefire and the release of the Israeli hostages in Gaza, where there is a very serious and shameful humanitarian situation, and I ask that the Palestinian population receive all the aid it needs. My prayerful hope is that Israelis and Palestinians can rebuild the bridges of dialogue and mutual trust, starting with the smallest, so that future generations can live side by side in the two States, in peace and security, and that Jerusalem can be the “city of encounter”, where Christians, Jews and Muslims live together in harmony and respect. Just last June, in the Vatican gardens, we joined in commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Invocation for Peace in the Holy Land that, on 8 June 2014, saw the presence of the then President of the State of Israel, Shimon Peres, and the President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, along with Patriarch Bartholomew I. That meeting bore witness to the fact that dialogue is always possible and that we cannot give in to the idea that enmity and hatred between peoples will have the upper hand. (Emphasis mine)

8. OK. so he does refer to hostages held in Gaza as a very serious and shameful humanitarian situation,
Thu Jan 9, 2025, 12:38 PM

and he does ask that the Palestinian population receive all the aid it needs.

But calling the Israeli hostage situation serious and shameful, and asking for aid to the Palestinian population does not amount to either "stepp[ing] up his recent criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza", or "calling the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave “very serious and shameful”.

But... spin, spin, spin.

And, BTW you clearly know a spin when you don't even happen to see one, as in your previous post. But, maybe it was more of a prediction. As they say, it takes one to know one.

You are amplifying the spin that is contained in the article you cited. I know why your source did this: it's click bait to generate profits by feeding manure to its target audiences. It's their business model.

And you are doing it... why?

16. Too bad Joe Biden didn't get to see the Pope next week because of the California fire emergency.

The first-ever Jesuit Pope might have had an earful for Joe Biden about the "shameful" situation in the Gaza Strip, but the addressing the California fires scrubbed the POTUS Italy summit. Their first meeting was quite warm and they shared some laughs. I don't know if the Pope received Confession from Joe Biden.

Footnote:

The RW Likud is the enemy of peace and the Democratic Party. There are many, many Israelis opposed to "Crime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," to wit:

Israel's first female Attorney-General Mrs. Gali Baharav-Miara is prosecuting Bibi for massive corruption and requested that his wife Sara be investigated for alleged trial interference.

Ms. Stav Shaffir, head of Israel's Green Party.
