Mark Zuckerberg says ending fact-checks will curb censorship. Fact-checkers say he's wrong.

Meta's fact-checking partners are rebutting Mark Zuckerberg's suggestion on Tuesday that their work is tantamount to censorship.

In announcing the social media giant's decision to end fact-checking in the U.S. on Facebook, Instagram and other Meta platforms, Zuckerberg said the move would "dramatically reduce the amount of censorship on our platforms." In a Facebook post explaining the company's shift to a community-driven moderation approach, Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan also said that "Too much harmless content gets censored, too many people find themselves wrongly locked up in 'Facebook jail'."

But those running the nonpartisan entities behind Meta's third-party fact-checking efforts said they had nothing to do with whether a post was removed from a platform, noting that the company was the final arbiter of what content it published.

"Facts are not censorship. Fact-checkers never censored anything," Neil Brown, president of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a nonprofit devoted to media literacy, said in a statement. Poynter's PolitiFact is among the entities that had teamed with Meta on fact-checking.

This is how they are in real life. They mob anyone who disagrees with them to humiliate them and shut them down. In fact, I'll name it. It's malicious mental battering and it's meant to push you off the platform.

There, now you reporters out there, wordsmith it and put it on legacy media

I don't even participate on social media that allows offensive bantering. In fact, I intentionally avoid people who spread false information. Why would I want to see it where I go to share my ideas and seek some peace from everything else we're dealing with out here?

They are to the rethugs. Since they cannot be truthful about anything, they don't like their lies being refuted. And, ole Zucks there makes way more when the landscape is a 'free-for-all' anyway. So many big money posters need to lie to maintain their illusions. They will be far more loose with their purse strings now.

bring down the MAGA cult. This idea that tech bros and oligarchs know what is best for this nation is absurd.

Maybe Zuck needs some good ole capitalist competition?

The political wheel will turn again towards the center - it always does (she says with fingers crossed).

That quote is often attributed to Mark Twain, but regardless of who said it, that truth is now out of date.

In this internet age with social media, lies can travel multiple times around the world while the owners of these platforms are removing shoes from the truth.

Donald Trump and MAGA charlatans could not win elections if truth was more effectively communicated than lies. Zuckerberg is smart enough to know this, but he apparently believes truth has already lost the battle and his personal interests lie with the liars.

The only thing that can save our democracy is the real world consequences that Mad King Donald's actions will have on the lives of his voters and everyone else. The Demoratic Party just needs to connect the dots. Easy enough to do, except the media empires are increasingly in the court of the King.

Far too many voters have already shown a propensity to believe absurdities. When the pain starts hitting them, the battle of the blame game will begin.

In my experience it always seemed to take two or three days for facebook to act on a flagged post, making their "fact checking" pretty much meaningless. By then the lies had been repeated thousands of times and spread far & wide.

Your part of the problem. Zuckerberg and Musk are only interested in more profits and they know that appeasing the magats will get them more subscribers. He also knows that most people on the left will not delete their accounts. So if you stay on these platforms you are part of the problem.
