President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday that NATO member countries were taking advantage of the U.S. and should be paying more than double what they currently are required to pay for their military defense. They could all afford it, but they should be at 5%, not 2%, said Trump, during a press conference from his Florida beachside compound Mar-a-Lago, talking about member countries contribution as a percentage of their Gross Domestic Product or economic output.
In February, Trump caused an uproar when he said during a campaign event that hed told a NATO leader that if a country had not paid their bills he would encourage Russia to do whatever the hell they want." Trump repeated the anecdote on Tuesday, this time identifying the leader as a prime minister, saying, Well, they weren't paying their bills. I said, 'we're not gonna protect you. You're not paying the bills.'
On Tuesday, Trump said he took a lot of heat in February for saying that the U.S. would not protect them if they were delinquent. I would've loved to have said Yes, we'll protect you even if you don't pay, he said Tuesday. But that's not the way life works.
The U.S. contributes 3.4% of its GDP and about 16% of NATO's annual budget. Poland is in top place, contributing 4.1% of it's GDP, followed by Estonia and the U.S, both at 3.4%, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.

(13,722 posts)He's an ignoramus who riffs on whatever pops into his head, some of which have stuck and become oft repeated "policy" inside his head.
This entertains his ignorant voting base, gives the press something to yammer about, and triggers the "libs," but how much of it actually translates to reality? Annexing Greenland and Canada, renaming the Gulf of Mexico? It's like the reality tv show that brought him into everyone's living rooms in the first place.
But it does have an impact in the real world, rendering the USA an unstable unreliable partner, undermining the NATO alliance.
Putin smiles as his investment keeps paying off.

One wishes the damn M$M would stop taking the bait - but then they are now owned by the very oligarchs who are pillaging our Treasury, so not much chance of that.

(2,468 posts)According to wikipedia, the ENTIRE US military expenditure is 3.4% of GDP..
To be clear, it's NOT that the US contributes 3.4% of its GDP to NATOs annual budget. USAToday cites the Council of Foreign Relations for its stats, but even there, the CFR is only supplying
the gross military expenditures as a percentage of GDP and not teasing out what percentage of the gross goes specifically to NATO defense.
IOW, while the 3.5% figure is reproduced in both the wikipedia entry and here:
https://www.cfr.org/expert-brief/nato-countries-reach-spending-milestone-2-percent-enough
Even the CFR chart describes gross %GDP spending by nations and does not support the USAToday article.

(4,840 posts)will come from Russia and the Europeans will not only be sacrificing their soldiers but their cities, infrastructure and civilian population. The Europeans will suffer with that far more than we do and it will last far longer before they recover. It will be theirs that get hit first.
Unless the war goes nuclear, it won't be our country that gets attacked by drones, short distant missiles or airplane attacks into the heartland. If it does go nuclear, it won't matter anyway because the world will be devastated.
Look at Ukraine. While they can hit some of the targets in Russia, the size of Russia allows them to spread out their defenses and infrastructure if only they knew how to fight a war. Thank goodness they don't.
