A strong snow and ice storm followed by brutally cold conditions will soon smack the eastern two-thirds of the United States as frigid air escapes the Arctic, plunging as far south as Florida, meteorologists forecast.
Starting Saturday, millions of people are going to be hit by moderate to heavy snow from Kansas City to Washington — including a high chance of at least 8 inches of snow between central Kansas and Indiana — the National Weather Service warned Friday. Dangerous ice particularly lethal to power lines — “so heavy like paste, it’s hard to move,” said private meteorologist Ryan Maue — is likely to set in just south of that in southern Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and much of Kentucky and West Virginia.
“It’s going to be a mess, a potential disaster,” Maue said. “This is something we haven’t seen in quite a while.”
National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Lamers said Friday that the potential for blizzard conditions is increasing, particularly in Kansas and neighboring portions of the Central Plains, and that wind gusts may reach 50 mph at times.

In the Sierras, there's something blowing in as we speak. It's blowing up to 45mph gusts, maybe 60+ over the summits.
Got the trash cans in the garage this morning before they went on wolkabout...
Supposedly over a foot for above 7000', maybe 4"-8" here around 6000'
We'll see how much actually sticks, it's gonna rain first...and the resulting mix is fondly referred to as "Sierra Cement"
YUCK!

(431 posts)Do you have Golf, football, Track, or Baseball Shoes to walk around in? Remember to call your Water Department and ask if the Water Pipes are Galvanized and Dipped in Zinc. In Cape Girardeau, MO, we have 1914 water galvanized pipes in use. Our Pipes are Crumbling due to the Freezing Cold snaps, so be on the lookout in your Town in America. I Love Clean Water.

(13,583 posts)I am a resident of the Florida Keys for the past forty years. As it happens, I’m having a a new great grandbaby next month, so decided to spend the holidays in Indiana this year until the newest little member arrives.
Practically every year you all send me good wishes as tropical hurricanes whiz by my front door with frequency.
Well guess what? This time I’m in the middle of blizzard central. Sigh.
Oh well! Daughter has three fireplaces in ths old farmhouse and due to several warm winters, the pole barn is filled with firewood. And if the tv goes out, all the less chance to see Rump’s face. So all is good here.
(But I do miss my flip flops…)
