Suspected Chinese underwater spy drone found by fishermen in waters off the Philippines

Source: CBS News/AFP

Updated on: January 2, 2025 / 7:29 AM EST

A submarine drone suspected to be from China was recovered in waters off the central Philippines, police said on Thursday, warning of "potential national security implications." Three fishermen found the drone on Monday around six miles off the coast of San Pascual in Masbate province, a police report said.

The Philippines and China have for years clashed over maritime rights in the South China Sea as well as possession of reefs and islets. China claims almost the entire sea, brushing off rival claims from other countries and an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis.

The yellow drone marked "HY-119" was found floating at sea before being turned over to authorities, regional police director Andre Dizon told AFP. It was about six feet long, and torpedo-shaped with fins.

"Based on our open-source research in the internet... HY-119 refers to a Chinese underwater navigation and communication system," Dizon said. "It has an antenna and an eye that can be used for viewing. Based on our research, this can be used for monitoring and reconnaissance." Dizon said the drone was not armed, but the police report listed "potential national security implications" as one significance of its recovery.

1. If China spent less money on its huge global spy network, maybe their economy wouldn't be in the toilet.

6. And what spy networks do we have? No assets on land there; just reports of hourly cyber attacks here.

Just posting an observation, not a criticism.

That their economy is allegedly in the toilet could be Beijing generated PR news; we've no real confirmation of the videos we see, nor from the best talk-talk think tank "fellows" analyses.

It's likely that after 3 years our best intelligence re China is classified across civilian/military systems, which means that posting links to show China's spending priorities is more helpful. As if this easily distracted, semi-literate public even cares.

7. By reputable accounts, China's housing crisis, municipality spending, covid lockdown, etc are valid.

Their huge military buildup, debt/loan traps.

I myself have spent time in China and seen firsthand, town after town of empty brand new housing.
Seen first hand all the overspending on infrastructure.

I also have some Chinese neighbors who just came to the US and confirm with first hand accounts
the serious economic problems in China.

China is doing everything it can to stifle criticism of their tanking economy.
Putting a great deal of pressure on Chinese economists to be quiet about it.

Of course there are American spy assets in China.
Just like in Russia.

4. No info on where the antenna links to, but likely to be a fake fishing trawler or a satellite controlled by the PLA's

Rocket Force—and one or more of its four arms—Aerospace Force, Cyberspace Force, Information Support Force, and Joint Logistics Support Force.

P.W. Singer's Ghost Fleet - A Novel of the Next World War (2015 Harper Collins) lays out this capability, from how China will wage war from its total mapping of the U.S. Pentagon above and below ground; along with its satellites disguised as comms satellites in order to shut down all U.S. satellites above, and so GPS systems on land & sea; along with rail guns to wipe out our blinded naval fleets and nuclear submarines, with a simultaneous shutdown of our 3 electrical grids.

This reported "find" doesn't even supply comment from our national security team.
But it's a big deal that points to China's long term and larger stealth strategy. We need to keep an eye out on any news about China's satellite and cyberforce systems and any more of China's 'found' weapons. Under trump our media will fail/refuse to make any effort to keep the public informed. China will distract our miltaries' focus toward their land & sea weapons and arms-control negotiations, when we should be looking up.

An abundance of caution is not paranoid but warranted, since China's pattern is to make sure that by the time we find out what they're doing, it's usually too late.

The U.S.N. has used them for surveys, water temp, salinity, etc..

Some photos of others that have shown up too.

I did not read the comments, but there are a few RWNJs sometimes, so be forewarned. Not worth engaging the crazy.
