Mitch McConnell Revealed to Be Among the Four Republicans to Sink Gaetz AG Nomination

Source: MEDIAite

Nov 21st, 2024, 2:51 pm

Longtime Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was reportedly among the four Republican senators to sink Matt Gaetz’s bid to be confirmed as attorney general.

According to The New York Times‘ Jonathan Swan, “Matt Gaetz told people close to him that he concluded after conversations with senators and their staffs that there were at least four Republican senators who were implacably opposed to his nomination: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and John Curtis of Utah.”

“Gaetz told confidants he did not want to get in a protracted confirmation battle and delay Trump from getting his attorney general in place immediately at the start of his administration,” added Swan.

Gaetz announced on Thursday that he was withdrawing from consideration for the powerful post shortly after he was informed that CNN would be reporting on a second alleged sexual encounter between the former congressman and a 17-year-old high school student. It had already been reported that a House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz had yielded allegations that he had sex with the 17-year-old and paid other women for sex.

“Gaetz told confidants he did not want to .... delay Trump from getting his attorney general in place immediately at the start of his administration,”

Contrast with Biden-Garland who twiddled thumbs for 18 months, and allowed the Trump infection to fester. The Biden-Garland vacuum was quickly filled by magats, Heritage, federalists (more than Garland).

Worst political decision in my lifetime (even worse than disbanding the Baath party/military in Iraq).

It seems pretty clear that he and at least a few other Republicans really don't want Gaetz to be AG. I don't know what their reasons are, but I'm sure pleasing Democrats isn't one of them.

No matter why he and the others opposed the appointment so strongly, I'm glad they did. I can easily feel that emotion without revising my overall opinion of any of them.

We know they aren't clean.

Why the sudden change?

If they were clean they would have voted to ban from office in impeachment #2?

I mean, why be a leader if the opposing party will clean up your mess? Just be as irresponsible as you can be and walk away from your responsibilities.

I think this is McConnell trying to take some responsibility, or at least indicating some buyers remorse, but it's far too little, too late. Same with Collins and Murkowski.

It's possible those four were the most adamant, but I'd be surprised if there weren't more. According to Lawrence O'Donnell, Gaetz is the most hated Republican in both houses of Congress... by Democrats and Republicans alike.

To me, the most interesting part of this is the fact that, for once, Senate Republicans did not give Trump something he wanted. I find that quite refreshing.

The majority were against him originally. Mitch won't be around. How about the other guy?
This is a lot of backbone for Colins who was sure Kavanough had learned his lesson and believed he'd protect abortion rights.
I think we can count on Murkowski if she survives.
But we need more than 1.

Even if he had the votes, this was going to shine a very bright light on that cockroach.

The confirmation hearings would have been devastating. I think Trump and Gaetz were counting on this being a recess appointment with no hearings.

The four were ready to be counted, but there were twenty behind them as well, and probably anotehr ten behind them. Gaetz is despised by anyone who has lived an even moderately upright life. He is unfit for public office, period.

Sex trafficking, sex parties and illegal drug use. The American people have a right to know what shenanigans their elected officials get up to after they spout off moralizing speeches on the floor of Congress.

"[Cawthorne] was charged twice with carrying a weapon to an airport, drew the ire of party grandees for claiming he had been invited to orgies by Republican colleagues, and faced questions over photos that featured him dressed in women's lingerie.

Perhaps the FBI (or other investigators) interviewed him about Matt Gaetz.

Before Gov DeSatan even thinks about filling Marco Rubio's seat with Gaetz next year, Congress should release that ethics report to the public.
