Matt Gaetz said Thursday he is withdrawing as President-elect Donald Trumps pick for U.S. attorney general, ending the controversial bid that put prior allegations of sexual misconduct in the spotlight.
I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many, Gaetz said in a statement posted on his X account.
While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition, said the former Republican congressman from Florida.
There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus Ill be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General, he said.

The Department of Justice's investigation into whether Gaetz sex-trafficked a minor girl ended last year without charges being filed. But the House Ethics Committee later restarted its own probe of allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, gave special favors to personal contacts and tried to obstruct government efforts to investigate him.

Gaetz's selection had put a new spotlight on prior allegations of sexual misconduct and other impropriety that had been investigated by the Department of Justice and the House Ethics Committee.

(7,702 posts)Reeps on his side were probably like "the optics of suppressing this report are too damaging if you're on the front page. We'll vote to withhold the report as long as you're not headline news."
Which confirms the validity and damage potential in the report.

"I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition," Gaetz wrote in a post on X, just a week after Trump announced he planned to nominate Gaetz to the position.
"There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus Ill be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trumps DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," Gaetz added.
Gaetz, who Trump named last week as his pick for AG, faced significant headwinds in the confirmation process.
Trumps selection of Gaetz brought fresh scrutiny to previous allegations against the former congressman, who faced an investigation by the Justice Department that involved allegations of sex trafficking and sex with a minor.
