WHY DO WE NEED SO MANY DATA CENTERS?

its not like a bank of computers can't store information/

What data are they collecting?

Data Centers are the new storage units. There are at minimum 10 storage units within my town. Some now are multi-storied. I asked other town official why are you approving them? Do people really have that much shit to store, I mentioned that many are just money laundering operations. I noticed that suddenly they passed a moratorium on allowing more in town.

I've used one occasionally to store a collector car here of there.

Just let that settle in.

It's for my bachelor's program. I actually have no idea what it does.

I had to make two power point assignments the past two weeks. And what do the software PP tools provided by the school have? You guessed it, AI generated design so you don't have to really bother much about your slides.

It's not going to get any better.

The super rich, the big corporations; al those people who see themselves as superior to the rest of us are using them as a means of solidifying their control over every aspect of our lives. They won't be happy until they can use our personal information to force us to conform to whatever role in life is left over after AI takes all the jobs it can take.
There won't be a thing they don't know about you. If they decide, you can be disconnected from any part of life they want to take from you.
Personal freedom will cease to exist.
I know this sounds Orwellian, but this is the wet dream of people like Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and other super rich folks that can't ever have enough, regardless of how much the have. They won't be happy even when they have it all and start to cannibalize each other.
Eventually, there will be a ruling elite, an overseer class that enforces the rules the elite make, and a large lower class that does what they're told if they want to live. Even governments will only exist at their whim.

This is their dream, we can't let it become our nightmare.

But like it or not, we indicate that we want them.

Those AI summaries for Google searches? Lots of processing power.

A friend applied for a teaching job. They had her background, since job interview and all. Called her Wednesday morning, "Can you give a sample lesson tomorrow at 10 am? We'll have students the right age, teachers, admin, and parents. And since you raise ___, and it's biology, it would be great if you could bring in breeding pairs to explain inheritance laws!" She hasn't taught biology for decades, no canned presentation on that. 15 minutes later, she had a lesson plan, questions, etc., in the correct "5E" format, with quiz. Made some fixes, took 30 minutes. AI.

Hell, even Google searches require storing a lot of data and then the processing capacity to index that data in useful ways. Amazon? You like Abe books?

Hey, where do you think Internet Archive keeps all of it's data, on a 1 TB SSD on some guy's desk in Des Moines? Google Drive and Google Classroom. MS OneDrive. The "Cloud".

This will pass through all kinds of server farms. It will be stored, somewhere, eventually. Lots of somewheres, both in the next 30-40 seconds and then in backups after that.

Do we need any of that? Not mostly. But every single time we use that capacity we're saying we want it. Disable all your auto-AI in searches. Don't use chatGPT. Don't much use the Internet, esp when it comes to image searches or image storage. (Imagine what no offloading of data storage would do to the need for places like Netflix or any other streaming service ... or OnlyFans ... to start building their *own* server farms, if they haven't already. Oh, wait, those are also data hogs.)

Like illegal drug trade in the US, there's a supply side--'build it and they will come"--and a demand side, with people that think they can make a living (aka 'profit') off supplying that want/need. Want to really cut down on server farms and the far more efficient and faster data centers, hey, let's go back to dial up modems.

portals. Mine goes thru Google. I refuse. It's inconvenient, but it's my small private rebellion.

Just read that Google's AI now scans users' emails and attachments -- bank statements, tax files, medical data -- "all of it." And there's reportedly a class action lawsuit underway.

charge a premium for water usage, charge for water reclamation (no, they can't just dump it - at least make them cool it down to ambient temperature), charge escalating rates for electricity based on how much they consume - I bet once the costs comes out of their pockets rather than being passed on to the communities there won't be as much demand.

without a lot of work, generally to mom and pop. u haul and such are in it as well.

i usually pay $35 a month for a few years so that i can eventually throw a few boxes of junk away.

but the data centers. who needs that much data? all that i see coming is endless finely focused hard sell advertising. unplug the damn things or make them generate their own power .

the dark side, artificial mind police scanning years of du archives to find support for "antifa" or "communism" or "woke ideology?" oh ya. sooner or later.
