Quote Origin: If You Would Know What the Lord God Thinks of Money, You Have Only to Look at Those to Whom He Gives It

Dorothy Parker? Martin Luther? Jonathan Swift? Alexander Pope? Anne Marsh-Caldwell? Matthew Poole? Richard Steele? Thomas Guthrie? Austin O’Malley? Maurice Baring?

Question for Quote Investigator: A scathing comment about wealthy people has been attributed to the U.S. writer Dorothy Parker:

If you would know what the Lord God thinks of money, you have only to look at those to whom he gives it.

Similar comments have been credited to German theologian Martin Luther, Anglo-Irish satirist Jonathan Swift, and English poet Alexander Pope. I do not know whether any of these attributions are correct because I am having difficulty finding solid citations. Would you please explore this topic?

Reply from Quote Investigator: An interview with Dorothy Paker appeared in “The Paris Review” in 1956. Parker employed the quotation under examination; however, she credited the statement to the English man of letters Maurice Baring. Boldface added to excerpts by QI:1

I hate almost all rich people, but I think I’d be darling at it. At the moment, however, I like to think of Maurice Baring’s remark: “If you would know what the Lord God thinks of money, you have only to look at those to whom he gives it.” I realize that’s not much help when the wolf comes scratching at the door, but it’s a comfort.

attributed to Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin that were spoken by someone previously. I just like the sentiment.

God sits on a golden throne within a city of gold. The christian god is such a god that values wealth. It is what it is.

these days though, I see much of it as allegory, song, poetry and metaphor. It is what we interpret it as.

I suppose I could try to consciously expand my circle of friends to include more of the yacht-club Chads, but I think I'll stick to my tried and few instead.

Two years older than I. My mother was his office manager.

His father started selling casualty and property insurance. He inherited the family business and grew it hugely. He and his wife lived in the modest house they inherited from her parents, over time added a room or two. Drove used cars. Had no household help. Taught Sunday School and adult Bible study. Gave to homeless shelters, women and children issues.

Both died two years ago within weeks of each other. They left an estate valued at around $175 million. Their will instructed their attorney exactly how to GIIVE EVERY PENNY OF IT TO LOCAL NON-PROFITS; not one penny to their two kids.

Their son and daughter inherited the business. Son started in the business as a janitor with an MBA, daughter as a secretary with degree in accounting.. They renovated the old house then donated it as a halfway house . Son runs the insurance side of the business, daughter runs the accounting firm. They drive old cars.

Trump would call them losers.

She had sarcasm and acerbic wit honed into extremely dangerous weapons.
She led a troubled life, but I think many, if not most, brilliant people do.

Love you, Dorothy! 😘
