'Attack on democracy': Trump threatens DC home rule pending mayoral election

President Donald Trump threatened D.C. home rule when asked Thursday about the race for D.C. mayor.

In the Oval Office Thursday, Trump warned if Janeese Lewis George wins next week's Democratic primary and becomes D.C.'s next mayor, the federal government could take over the nation's capital.

“Well, I wouldn’t like it, and maybe we’d take back Washington and run it on the federal basis,” Trump said. “We won’t put up with it. We’re not going to lose our businesses. By the way, Washington, now, is a safe, beautiful place.”

Democratic socialist holds wide lead in DC mayor race

City Council member Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, holds a sizable lead in the high-stakes Washington, D.C., Democratic primary to replace retiring Mayor Muriel Bowser (D).

The latest results from Tuesday’s election show Lewis George with almost 53 percent of the vote, putting her 16.28 percentage points ahead of former D.C. Council at-large member Kenyan McDuffie, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

Many people in the establishment media claim that Democrats fears of the GOP overreaching and threatening democracy are overblown. But history says otherwise. This is a political party with a track record of wanting to throw out unfavorable election results, and even trying to do it with a mob on January 6, 2021.

Also, there is a double standard here: if the federal government wanted to mandate something for red states that was historically left to the states, such as some gun laws, conservatives would be up in arms. This is far more than a federal mandate: it is telling what should be a state that it cannot be trusted to govern itself because it doesn't vote for Republicans.
