This is a political party with a track record of wanting to throw out unfavorable election results, and even trying to do it with a mob on January 6, 2021.

Also, there is a double standard here: if the federal government wanted to mandate something for red states that was historically left to the states, such as some gun laws, conservatives would be up in arms. This is far more than a federal mandate: it is telling what should be a state that it cannot be trusted to govern itself because it doesn't vote for Republicans.
