...that this ogre has torn asunder.
It may be much more difficult to do than anyone imagines? Years of name-calling and threats have ripped apart our relationships with our long-time allies.
The inanity and insanity of Trump has taken its toll. People around the world are sick of him. His spiel has no appeal.
But, America cannot make it in this world without our friends and Trump has replaced our true friends with oil-rich dictators and oligarchs. That cannot stand.

(1,672 posts)That will be a task with several fronts:
Holding the criminals accountable
Restoring voting rights
Legislate Citizens United away to keep dark money out of elections
Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine to help bring back true journalism
If we can prove that we have restored and strengthened our democracy, our allies might have faith in us again.

(115,985 posts)He was put into office with a rabid cult following and a good percentage of brainwashed citizens that bought into the right-wing propaganda, pushed in front by a large percentage of apathetic Americans that did not vote at all. Donald Trump is not America.

(3,505 posts)... if it ever is. For now they know how our system of government is critically flawed, and how it can be co-opted by extremist kleptocrats who will operate in their own self-interest - and who will throw international cooperation under the bus whenever they like.
Beware!

and been continuously abused by this administration and his Republican lackeys---
That MUST BE the "top priority" of the next Democratic president!
However, trying to repair the damaged relations with our allies IS and SHOULD BE
high on the list of priorities--- but NOT FIRST on the list when there are sure to be
a lot of people literally "starving" at home!!!!

(19,983 posts)know that the US can be completely upended at any election. The first time around, it could have been a fluke, not this time.
We are always one election cycle from having a madman destroy everything.
Remember in school we were taught that "The United State is a country of Laws", that "No one is above the law, it applies equally to all of us", and that there are "checks and balances" to keep everyone in line.
What he has taught us is that our system of "checks and balances" and "rule of law" only works if someone is willing to enforce them.
Currently, there are few meaningful checks on his actions. There is no one with the power to enforce those checks on him willing to do so.
So, we are, in simple terms: fucked, and not in a consensual way.
He does what he wants and currently what he wants is to kill people and swing a bat in the metaphorical china shop of the world.
He's a malevolent toddler....a come-to-life Chucky doll, only less benign.

Not a delicacy to consume and shit out trash interpretations for the wants (not needs) of a few.

(5,130 posts)Theres no reason to ever trust the U.S. again. Anyone who thinks Piss dying or leaving office is going to magically change things is out of their mind. What theyre doing is fundamentally what this country was built on. Theyre just dragging everything back to the Gilded Age.
Were going to have to fight all the battles all over again. Labor movement, womens rights, civil rights
.the whole shabang.
Maybe this time well get it right and do the full on revolution we should have had in the early 1930s.

(2,864 posts)we have some many priorities (including what you note with international relations) and that will need to be addressed simultaneously.
Also expecting the next admin will not let putin and israeli leadership call the shots on US foreign policy like the trumpsters have been so willing to do.

(335 posts)The cost of fixing everything Juilus Geezer has or will destroy and steal will be enormous.
Repubs tax cuts for the wealthy mean our debt will continue to skyrocket.
The 2 Santa Claus theory means that repubs will scream about any new spending because we have
so much debt and can't afford it.
Somehow Dems are going to need to get a spine and raise taxes on the wealthy.
They also need to alter or get the supreme court line othewise they will shoot down any changes Dems try to make.
As far as our relationships with allies, that will take some years as the American voter has shown that they are fools and will elect a convicted felon. Our allies won't trust that 4 years after a Dem trys to repair the damage the american voters will put in another repub that will just destroy it all over again. Our allies will need to see repubs act responsible before any long term trust can develop.

(15,515 posts)five years ago.
Then our fellow country men and women decided that they wanted to completely burn it all down.
As many noted, countries have moved on and won't trust us to not do this again.
So, IF we have an election and IF it goes properly and IF this enough of our country men and woman don''t gobble up the bullshit the right will scream about with our candidate and we elect a good dem, he or she should do an initial outreach to foreign leaders, not make any promises, just let them know he or she will start to try to clean up the mess and will operate in an ethic and honorable manner while office and then start to work on the ENDLESS list of messes that will need to get cleaned up.
Just too much, in too short of a time, to get worked out here to worry about much else abroad.

(11,173 posts)for another dictator to take over our government in the future. Nobody will trust the U.S. again as long as its possible for another Krasnov to emerge. Thats for Congress to address. The President should support that effort with the appropriate policies.
As for priorities for the President it should be economy first and foremost which is to make an affordable society for everyone to live in again. Government has to have its peoples backs, not stabbing them in their backs like Republicans have done.
