Before Championing a Candidate in a Primary, Check Their Vote
How did they vote on the Laken Riley Act in 2025? In both the House and Senate, some Democrats voted with Republicans to help get this bill passed. Once it became law, it played a large role in the arrest and detention of immigrants by ICE. It allowed for and demanded that arrestees be detained under certain circumstances where they had broken the law. Unfortunately, ICE used the act to detain people without really demonstrating that they had committed criminal acts. Those detained included children and even some US citizens. This is still going on, even if not at the level of what occurred in Minneapolis, MN. The Act passed, but only because of those Democratic votes.
So, it's worth learning about this act and discovering which Democrats voted for it. It's a consideration you might want to make before voting in a primary election where two Democratic candidates are vying for the same seat in the next election.
Of course, if a general election candidate voted for Laken Riley, you should still vote for him or herr, since any Democrat as a better choice than any Republican.
We have an open Senate seat here in Minnesota. One candidate voted for the act. The other was not in a position to vote for or against it , but states that she would have voted against it. The Primary election, which will decide which of the two candidates appears on the November ballot, may be decided by that one vote with Republicans. It's certainly part of the campaign advertising.
So, check your primary candidates votes on the Act. How they voted is worth noting. Use your best judgment.
