(26,755 posts)Many of them WANT the things that Trump does and represents. That's why they back him.
When Trump is gone, they will continue with a fascist agenda -- IF we let them.

(12,722 posts)I also dont buy the notion that Republicans are scared to death of Trump. Some most likely are but my guess is a majority approve of most of what Trump is doing. They arent just sitting quietly nodding, they are on television lying right along with Trump.
Republicans and their enablers in the media are willing to let Trump destroy their country. Ruin every institution, murder people, put people in concentration camps, erase our history, bomb boats, damage relationships with allies, deface the White House, spend tax payers money without restraint, and so much more.
Unprecedented corruption, unprecedented lack of oversight.

(16,004 posts)Many Republicans in Congress are fully on board with the White Nationalism, ethic cleansing of brown immigrants, Christo-fascism, and Project 2025 shredding of government programs. They're just fine with the culture war, censorship, weaponization of justice, voter suppression, and unitary executive -- as long as their side is in charge.

(12,447 posts)So, I thought way back then, what is the GOP trajectory? In their pursuit of rule by wealth they would never actually have a majority. They would have to compromise to simply survive. Once they had Nixon and a new age of cheating and racist division they would develop a taste for doubling down and reaping financial "rewards". Once Reagan hit then it seemed they had reached pinnacle Conservative rationality and it was not enough. Voting machines dawned bleakly of the electoral horizon. But the trajectory would always depend on war, divisions, compromise and finding some figurehead who could still be THAT bad. Useful idiots? Rich guys? In the end, I thought, it would be a military dictator, but NO, a populist rich guy with the severest issues sleazed his way in, easily upstaging his preening, non-TV experienced rich guys. Probably the Epstein cabal was a deciding factor.
This was always going to pit the utter degeneration of the "elite" grabby class against dis-empowered democratic forces and the general decline in leadership and institutions, the utter loss of that good old "charism" thing unless you think Satan is charismatic.
JFK talked of his party's trajectory and all we have is a historical interest in the trajectory of bullets.
