The Best And The Brightest -- Digby

https://digbysblog.net/2026/06/14/the-best-and-the-brightest/

It was quite a morning for Trump's henchmen on the Sunday shows:

HEGSETH: We have controlled the straits this entire time

BRENNAN: You're negotiating with them to reopen it pic.twitter.com/BEgqpmYBB5
-- Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 14, 2026

BRENNAN: But there is a crisis with those weapons stockpiles right now

HEGSETH: No there is not. That is a manufactured story that the media wants to peddle

BRENNAN: You have testified to it in front of Congress

HEGSETH: You don't have to read back to me what I testified pic.twitter.com/sxqM9l4Lca
-- Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 14, 2026

HEGSETH: The document says Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, won't seek one, won't buy one, won't have one

BRENNAN: The JCPOA said that too

HEGSETH: But they didn't have the threat of military force the way we do that Iran respects. President Trump led with military might. pic.twitter.com/PQcS6hHhEe

Actually, when Obama's team negotiated the JCPOA, the United States had just invaded Iraq, deposed its leadership, and had occupied the country for a decade. I'm fairly sure the Iranians were aware of America's military prowess. They were also aware of the political complications, which is why they were able to drive a hard bargain. They are in an even better position to do that today with the feckless Donald Trump in charge.

Hegseth wasn't the only one who stumbled:

Markwayne Mullin: "The Democrats always want to throw out the Constitution all the time. Well, great -- let's throw out the Constitution. I mean, not throw it out, but throw it out as an argument...I meant throw out the Constitution as an excuse." pic.twitter.com/kBp15IzjfG

Markwayne Mullin is still talking about shutting down international travel to big blue cities: "I'm gonna have to go get the resources. The most logical way for me to get the resources is to go to CBP at the airports, because they are trained to deal with large crowds." pic.twitter.com/lnFcSsMmpE
-- Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) June 14, 2026

HUNT: The Heritage Foundation has documented a total of 25 instances of prosecution for voter fraud where citizenship was an issue. Just 25.

MARKWAYNE MULLIN: 25 is 25 too many. It's kinda like one individual who dies from the hands of an illegal is one too many. pic.twitter.com/i1iB9M6p68

So let's make voting impossible and deport anyone who looks like they might be foreign. Just in case.

It's lucky for us that no Real Americans commit any crimes because otherwise this might not make any sense at all.
