The claim that Melania Trump speaks six (or five) languages fluently has been primarily promoted by Melania Trump herself and her political team, often repeated by supporters and media commentators to emphasize her international background. However, her actual fluency in languages other than her native Slovenian and English is widely disputed by journalists, biographers, and fact-checkers, with consensus indicating there is little evidence of conversational fluency in languages like French, German, or Italian.Documented Language Skills
There is a consensus among linguistic observers, fact-checkers, and biographies that she has native or functional command of the following languages:
Slovenian: Her native language, spoken fluently.
English: The primary language she uses for all public engagements and speeches.Serbo-Croatian (or Serbian/Croatian): Reportedly learned during her upbringing in the former Yugoslavia. Because of its close similarity to Slovenian, she is known to possess at least passive knowledge or conversational ability.
The Claimed Additional Languages
Melania has historically claimed to speak Italian, French, and German, which would bring her total to five or six languages when counting her native tongue. However, these claims are heavily debated:
Fluency vs. Basics:
While she lived and modeled in Europe, evidence suggests her foreign-language skills may be limited to basic greetings or stock phrases rather than conversational fluency.
Public Use: In professional and diplomatic settings, such as interacting with European or Russian leaders, she frequently uses translators.
During her time as First Lady, direct footage of her speaking languages other than English and Slovenian has been largely limited to simple introductory phrases.

for Republicans?
Teresa Heinz Kerry spoke many languages fluently enough that she had worked as a UN instant translator. Her spoken and written English was near flawless, unlike Melania.

Melania's grasp of English is not very good, either.
