More FIFA ⚽️ omnipotence (X & text) changing stadium names and taping over condiment labels

I heard the announcer last night at the Brazil - Morocco game at the Met Life (the Meadowlands) say “I’ve been told we are to refer to this as the New York New Jersey stadium” and I saw this post on X. Did I hear right? Is this true? Yes, of course it is, it’s FIFA.

FIFA brand restrictions go to new extremes with ‘taped over’ condiments at World Cup game

FIFA are well-known for wanting to keep their brand out in the open at the World Cup, but some of their restrictions are extreme to say the least.

We have seen stadiums like the Estadio Azteca renamed to the Mexico City stadium and the MetLife stadium to the New York/New Jersey stadium for the duration of the tournament.

To make matters worse, the items inside the media room aren’t even free of charge, with one journalist revealing the extortionate price they paid for food and drink during a game.

or it’s been Met Life for so long it’s just impulse for him to say.

Vancouver gets a pass because it’s publicly owned. Mercedes in Atlanta gets a pass even though there was an idea to take or cover up the logo outside. Seriously.

our football stadium, Arrowhead, is now Kansas City stadium 🙄. Regarding the condiments, I wonder what FIFA would have done if the stadiums had refused to tape over the brand name of said condiments, and I mean once the teams had already arrived here in the US. It’s absolutely ridiculous that they had to do this.

Shameful they have not changed it all, and also banned that tomahawk chop bollocks (same for the Atlanta baseball team on both things as well). Native Americans should never be used as mascots.

Think the NFL would debase The Shield? For less than the going rate, I mean?

I've donned a few 'win, place or show' competitive medals, and they're not made out of bottle caps and cheap ribbon.

Since the BBC is not allowed to advertise in the UK, they used to be extremely strict about not showing brand names. So, in the 70s, the children's programme 'Blue Peter' would show you how to make things at home out of things like cereal packets and condiment bottles - but they had to have tape on for TV. And while the whole country referred to 'sellotape' for what you used to stick things together, that was a trademark, so they had to say "sticky tape", although no-one else did. Eventually they got more relaxed about it.

In the UK, we've had "Estadio Azteca" or "Aztec Stadium" (didn't realise that is a brand name), but "New York New Jersey Stadium" (which is actually more informative to us - "MetLife Stadium" would mean nothing to 95%).

I does have a corporate sponsor and name. Banorte is the 4th biggest bank in Mexico and the name is very unpopular apparently.

Why did FIFA require a name change? Everyone calls it Estadio Azteca.
